my dad has a cracking 998 in his '73 which my brother put together for him,

its much like some of the others really,

pocketed block,
12g940 head that was ported and had the chambers tidied up
kent 266
hif38 with a k&n
cooper freeflow, twin box rc40

and that is about it, made 80bhp and 70lb/ft torque on hi-tech rolling road a couple of years ago, the same day i took a customers 1275 which made 63bhp!

it drives great and really does rev very easily, i would like something similar in my metro when i get round to it.

80HP! Really?

there is no guarantee that the rollers arnt out of calibration or anything like that, but i assure you im not making it up, thats what the sheet says, we have the print out to prove it, mick at hi-tech was over the moon with it! as was my dad!

Fair enough, just doesn't look like the sort of setup that would push out 80BHP

That does sound a bit high for the specification.

One might have expected around 60 to 65 bhp. Remember, the original 998 Cooper only had 55 bhp and 80 bhp is over 40% up on that.

I built a Cooper with a very full-on 998 engine which had a 286 cam, big-valve 12G295 head, modified twin HS2 carbs, 10.5:1 CR, everything matched, Aldon Red dizzy, etc, and it gave 73 bhp at 6600 rpm on the Autotechnique rollers in Luton. Nothing below about 3500 rpm, but revved to well over 7000 rpm. This was a tarmac historic rally car.

When we fitted a 970 'S' engine with twin HS4 carbs, 12G940 race head, etc, etc, it gave 84 bhp at 7200 rpm but nothing useable below 4000 rpm.

I got a 1060 cc Cooper engine to give 66 bhp at 6000 rpm with a 295 head, 510 cam, 10.4:1 CR, Aldon Red dizzy, HS4 carb (modified on Howley flowed manifold), freeflow manifold & RC40 box, all lightened, balanced, and carefully built.

Still running nowadays but whit close ratio gearbox, 3.65diff and a twin box side exit maniflow.... even more fun...!!!

After last rebuilt, whit std 12g940.

I don't wish to be rude but the amount of money some of you guys are spending to get a 998 up to 80 bhp you may as well stick a 1275 in and be done with it. The many hundreds of pounds saved will cover any extra insurance cost if that's an issue.

Sure if it's a car that needs to keep it's originality, but otherwise??

Like I say, I don't want to dig you guys out, I just don't get it.

Good luck though.
