I can get 70 on a GPS (75 on speedo) without too much difficulty on a level road. I reckon I could get it up to 85 on the clock, not sure what that would be on speedo, probably about 75-78ish. But, it's a road car, so I don't need more than 70. Plus it will guzzle fuel at 70, so I've started to keep it down to around 50-60 on the dual carriageways. Standard 998, no performance mods whatsoever.

I made the mistake of overtaking someone on a dual carriageway, and then couldn't get back into the outside lane. I had to do seventy for about two minutes, and I reckon Vinnie used about a quater of a tank

No matter what you do you can't alter the laws of physics. The aerodynamics will determine how much power you need to achieve a given speed.
Now, a 998 Cooper and a 1275GT both have about 55 bhp and will do 88 to 90 mph or thereabouts given the correct gearing. A 1275 'S' with 75 bhp will do 95 to 97 mph, so to do 100 mph requires 80 bhp.
The aerodynamic drag increases as the square of the speed in terms. So to double the speed requires 4 times the power. That's a bit of over-simplification as the gearing will make it slightly worse and the engine would need the ability to pull very high revs as well for high top speed.
A standard 998 will do around 80 to 82 mph in still air on a level road.
To give a guide:

850 Mini BHP 34 Top speed 72 to 75 mph
998 Mini BHP 38 to 40 Top speed 78 to 80 mph
Cooper 997/998 BHP 55 Top speed 85 to 88 mph
Cooper 'S' 1275 BHP 75 Top speed 94 to 96 mph
Mini 1275GT BHP 55 to 60 Top speed 88 to 90 mph

Speedo error, up to around 10 mph at over 90 mph, even more if gearing has been changed or different wheels and/or tyres fitted.

I have got 100mph out my standard 998, with a box airfilter.

Yes, if you like. To do 100 mph on the level in still air requires about 80 bhp and gearing that gives 100 bhp at revs for that max power.
If that is what your car has, then it will do 100 mph. If not, then it won't

Well that's what it has done though..

100mph from a standard 998 Clubman (Assuming its the car in your sig)? I think not. The 1275GT could only manage 90mph standard.

nope i am still on 10's as the car was made and got a 10 inch speedo, 1275gt can go faster than 90 as we got my dads old clubby off the clock, so it can be done,i know what my car can do as i was there as my mate and girlfriend was in the car and can even say them self's what it said on the speedo, maybe yours doesn't go as fast as mine as every mini has different top speed.

ashley
EDIT: you can see this is my channel on youtube and can see that my dads old 1275gt clubby can do more than 90mph not an amazing video but can still see,

Sounds almost perfect to me. My 1275 is rocking 81bhp and can just about manage 100mph.

Whats that Cooperman? "You cant change the laws of physics", But I bet if Scoty had a 998 he would use all his Dilithium crystals to get it up to 100mph. But any more than that and he would warn that "she canna tak ony mare captain or shes gonna blow" Also if theres clingons on the the starboard bow it wont help with the aerodynamics,

:yinyang:

Yeah, doesn't it always. How many know that worn tyres can increase the indicated top speed by as much as 2.5%.
A 15 mph tail wind can add another 8 to 10 mph or more at over about 75 mph and a
5% downhill slope can add another 5 to 8 mph.
The true top speed is on a level road, or the average of runs in opposite directions in nil-wind conditions. It has to be in still air as drag is not a straight-line graph when compared to speed through the air.

agree with that, i think cooperman should have his own pinned topic where he can add his pearls of wisdom and mini stories at his leisure for our pleasure. :)
