You are doing the correct thing by stripping and checking your E-bay purchase, You just never know these days. Mini engines are becoming more and more expensive and some people are trying to cash in by selling some very dodgy stuff! Not saying you have a bad one but its as well to check!!

cheers andymini,
soo true he also claims that he had a stage 5 cylinder head running with this 1380 and will take some pics tomorrow, but i am thinking that it was a stage 5 head, looks very std... so i will have to have a word with the seller...
and i will measure the head size tomorrow.

cheers for all the help lads

Also going from the alternator bracket in the first pick, its an early a series engine. Plus that’s also a early 1275 head with later a+ rockers.

My guess is its an a series, standard 1275, not a metro 1275 with no special extras.

is it just a standard 1275 and not a metro, im new to engine building so thanks for your input

I see your in Plymouth, If you have any doubts take it along to Paul Inch, He will give you an honest assesment of what you have bought. Top Bloke!!

EDIT
(Paul Inch) Google him for the address and phone number. Knows Mini engines inside out and upside down.

Well I’ve always thought of the A+ engines being the metro ones, being as that’s about the same time the metro was introduced.

It would help if there was and engine number tag on the block, but conveniently that’s been removed.

The sintered type rockers were also on late A series. ( at least the ones that were sent over to CA )

I'm still thinking that the block pictures is a standard bore. How could a 1380 have "STD" pistons?

The AE 20659's which you use for 1380's have STD stamped on them aswell so don't dismiss it for being a STD bore size. I would say by the looks of those pistons they are an old set, most likely Hepolite ones. The bore does look rather close to 2 and 3 so it may well be bored to 1380 you just need to measure.

Get some pics of the head up we will be able to tell if it's modified or not.

It is an Aseries block, with an A series head...... the rockers are sintered....... The pistons can quite easily be form another vehicle as well, triumph 2000 or 2500 pistons being that much bigger, however they would also have standard stamped on them as well as the 73.5 AE pistons.

Is it worth checking the bottom end?? I mean if the blocks been bored to 1380 (which looks likely) could it be a stroked crank as well. It looks like quite an old build, so if it were me id check for a CMS and the mains and big end bearing shells.

i measured it earlier today and it is a bored out 73.5mm piston but it has standard pistons in them it looks like.

the head looks like it has had better days and is stamped

All looks good! Big valve head on a 1380. NICE!! Should get the chambers measured and see if it will take a slight skim.

Edit: Cant really tell because of the carbon, but it looks like those chambers have been smoothed . You may well have a very nice head there.
