This is so cool beentheunseen. I never had the idea how to create mini iPhone holder until I found this one. I’m into 3D printed iPhone cases lately. My designs are not limited to face profiles, but I also print complicated designs using Flexible Elastic Rubber filament. Usually bright colour filaments sell like hot cake. Do you think guys it would be profitable to 3D print prototype car parts using this kind of material?

As the OP seems to have dissapeared and demand seems to be high I thougth I would offer my services.
I do not want to get involved with the electronic side of this, however if there is demand for for a basic phone holder that clips into the ashtray slot I am happy to print some asoon as I find some dimensions for the ashtray.
If anybody would be interested in one let me know and I will draw up the designs and get these printed asap.
Also if anybody has a spare ashtray they could take detailed measurements from that would speed up the process.

Would you like a CAD model of the ashtray? I am sure I could model the exterior easily enough tomorrow? I am using Solidworks 2012 so should be able to produce various file types

That would be ideal if you could(free phone holder for your trouble(other than P+P) if you want one) as I dont have access to a dash rail or ashtray to model it from. I'll be modeling the mount on solidworks anyway, so that would be fine, a DXF would be ideal.

I will see what I can manage, would you like it exactly how it fits in the mini (with the tangs on the side used to hold it into the dash rail) or just a solid semi-circular part ?
I dont think the tangs would be possible with a 3d printer?

The little tabs that hold it in place would print fine and would ideally be needed to secure it to the dash.
So the basic semi-circular shape to the right dimensions with the tabs in correct places would be good if possible.

I will get on that tomorrow in my lunch break from uni assignments,
Shame you're not closer, I have been wanting to get a hold of a 3d printer for a while, looks like a lot of fun and being a student funds are limited!

We are currently designing a low-cost 3d Printer intended for educational use that should be ready for limited production in the next few months. Looking to sell them around the £500 mark, so an ideal entry level for students. We are currently running 3 makerbots in our studio, great fun to be had and ideal for projects like this.

I was looking at prusa i3 repraps recently however funds are low, but I may invest this summer but I believe they are a little bit less to produce than £500
However you will be in the money if you can make it "plug and play" without the fettling and tweaking which is currently an inherent design weakness of the rep rap systems.

We have printed a prototype today and will try to get one in a mini this week to test. If all goes well these may be available from next week.

First prototype is finished, hopefully having a test fit tomorrow.
If it fits these will be available next week in the following colours:
Black, White, Red, Green, Blue, Gold, Glow in the Dark, Grey, Purple, Yellow, Orange
Will advertise them in the traders section when they are ready but probably looking at £10 + P&P(about £3 at a guess)
