No, I can't afford to run 2 cars, I'm only paying insurance & tax for the clio at mo, and the mini's in storage.
My folks are buying the clio off me I think, and I'm gonna try get my hands on a clubman.

I haven't driven a new mini, no, but it's very unlikely that if I liked the way it drove I'd buy one.

Andy, chuck us the link to that thread. It'd be interesting to read what the other Bini owners/lovers (apart from the one decent one we seem to have taken under our wing here) actually responded.

If it's any consolation, I too think that all modern cars are soulless. All this technology and modern regulations have made them so. Regardless of which modern car you get (I've driven quite a few of the modern super cars too.... Astons, Mercs, Fords (OK Yank ones but....), Beemers and so on!), and I think that regardless of how much power or luxury they have they all have one thing in common: Boredom. Yes a Vantage is fast, yes it goes nicely round corners, but it does it in such an efficient way that it has no character.

Pikey.... Hi mate, nice to know someone still cares about character in a car! How do I add u as a friend or something simelar? If you go to the british mini club forum, then to the chill-out lounge, the link's called 'Look at this point the moderators mean NOTHING!', I posted it while rather intoxicated, and at a time when I had just parted with my mini. Not that I don't miss it EVERY day... :ermm:

Herby.... Hey man, thanks for the dates & times but I don't have sky sports, I do understand what you're trying to tell me, but I've sat in the back of one and didn't much enjoy it. It's not that I'm being stubbourn or naieve, I'm just not a fan of the new mini. I really hope I haven't offended you. :genius:

Sorry, forgot to mention I went to the Brick & Steel Borders Rally on Saturday and it was ABSOLUTELY fantastic!! (However I mistook a Hillman Avenger for a Mk1 Escort, should take some living down!!)

F1 has become Corporate, Less exciting and far less dangerous. Jim Clark and Ayrton ALL THE WAY. My favourite season of all time was the 1967 season, in which half the drivers died, and the franchise was not owned by huge companies. (sponsorship wasn't an issue, drivers raced for their name, NOT for money.)

Ps. Sorry HERBY mate, I didn't mean to invade your thread...

I may be a bit late for the original subject, but around here in Southend and Essex the norm is for Mini drivers to give an affirmative wave to each other, not flash the lights. I consider that great... some guy in a BINI tried to wave at my dad in his Mini the other day... he didn't reply... :ermm:

I think the comment that most annoyed most classic mini owners was the reference in the BMW marketing speil to flashing the "[B]ini fraturnity"...

The notion of classic minis flashing and acknowleging each other is because of the relative rarety of classics these days, thus making owning one part of an exclusive club. This is a true fraturnity. We are all proud to keep the heritage of the original Mini alive for all that it stands for.

The challenge with the modern bini is that they are all too popular. There are simply too many of them about for people to care to ackowledge each other.

Bini owners (Herby) should appreciate that classic mini owners will take offence to slick marketing campaigns from BMW trying to cash in on the true friendship classic mini owners show for each other.

Totally agree with 'andyinlondon', it is because the classic mini's are so rare and it's such a delight to see one.

Mini's have SOUL, man - you drive one because of the way it makes you FEEL, BINI's are simply a new hatchback. Speaking of which, the new Golf gti would get it's arse whooped by an old one from the 80's too. It's all because of those health n safety boffins!!

I'm just curious, do the bini's have ABS n Traction control??

Maybe BMW own Mini just 'because they're feeling nostalgic, want to remember their past and feel they owe it something. The first car BMW produced was an original Austin 7 under licence. They called it a Dixie or something like that.

To me flashing other mini's is like patting the other driver on the back, ur sayin " i know all the work uv gone through to get it to drive past me today - nice one"

also the fact that we have dedicated magazines, shows, forums, shops etc all for mini's and their owners reinforces the group/club feeling and flashing is just like our fancy handshake.

as for bini's. i just dont see it as a mini and dont care. I think its obvious to everyone that it isnt a true mini, we dont need to keep coming up with reasons to prove it. everyone knows it isnt anything to do with the 'classic mini' it is just the BMW MINI.

The original mini was so great was because it was so unique in its charm and character.

If BMW want to achieve that status then they need to start their own history instead of tagging onto the end of the mini's.

i've only read 7 pages so i dont know if anyone already said this but surely......
the new MINI is just another fast off the production line car is it not? classic mini owners put ALOT of time and effort into giving their cars their own personality/look which they all do very well (looking at the projects on this forum) the classic mini owners have a car which they basically re-made themselves to their own spec and this is what the classic mini scene is about. people are interested about what goes on with their car and CONSTANTLY spend time and money to keep them looking good, and actually moving!!
herby.. you just picked up your car, got in it and drove off......and thats all you have been doing since right? apart from asking for it to be painted 'gold' what effort have you put into your car to make it that much different to every other BINI? because unless you built it yourself its not different is it? no offence meant in anyway, its just you cant come on here dishing out sneidy comments to thousands of enthusiasts who more than likely dont actually care, it just doesnt make sense does it?

anyway rant over
