If it's a 1963 1071 Cooper 'S' the body number will be between K-A2S4 384601 to K-A2S4 563492.

He's declared the engine conversion to the DVLA who have then changed it on the logbook??

would they have changed it to a mini cooper s then
is that possible

It was possible back in the 1960's and 70's........I converted a Mk3 Mini 1000 to full Mk3 Cooper S spec in the 1970's and asked the DVLA to change the engine capacity to 1275 and description to Cooper S on V5 which they did without question on receipt of a covering letter and a local garage engineers report confiming the spec........car was eventually scrapped in 1980's but would have caused similar confusion now if it had survived to the present day!

It would have retaned it's 998 / 850 chassis number though.

The chassis number is the key to identifying its origin. However, if it has been fully re-built as a Cooper 'S' with everything as it should be then there is no reason to dismiss it as a 'fake'. I rallied my 1962 1275 Cooper as an 'S' and everyone accepted it
as such.

Not to dismiss the car as a 'fake' but if it pre dates the launch of the S and has a standard Morris chassis number (we will have to wait or the OP for that one) it will only ever be one of two things, a standard Mini converted to S specification, or a Cooper upgraded to S specification, it won't be a Cooper S, it would have had to have left the factory as an S to be classed as one, this is not intended to knock the car (which I've never seen) but if people get the idea that they can just build a car and sell it as an S (which has already happened many times in the past) you will end up with an awful lot of very disappointed people that are out of pocket. There is absolutely no problem with building a car to S specification and above, but people must recognise that they should sell the car on with an accurate description, then we won't see all the posts about eBay cars saying look at this 90's rover mini with a 60's logbook ect, or standard MK 1's / 2's / 3's with Cooper log books attached

I'm sure it is ... but it wasn't in 1962 when it left the factory!

By the way, I just looked at your scan of the logbook again.

The "A' registration letter was the first suffix issued in some areas in 1963 but your car is recorded as first registered in 1962 so it means the original 4-number 2-letter registration number was transferred off the car and replaced, as so many others, with an unused A number.

We need to know the chassis number prefix, not the numbers after it as they will be unique to the car, pictures of the inside of the boot / engine bay / floor pan around the gear remote would be good
