Mine is very much unintentional rat look
Always been used as a daily and then when my dad repaired the rust under the headlights he painted it with hammerite but over time it has faded so you can see the dull patches at the front wing and the bottom of the rear quater. Also things like small cracks in the rear lights and a cracked rear wheel arch etc :proud: Oh and rust around the radio ariel........ all being repaired now though as it got a bit too rusty!

The rat look's not one of my favourites, I must admit, but seeing them up close you've really got to appreciate the work that goes into them and preserving them. Minis that have been abandoned and naturally got in that state... that's a different thing altogether. I'm a massive fan of that, there's some nice ones on the MCR forum here.

No work went into mine, matter of fact the exact opposite!!

I left my elf under a cover up the side of the garage for 2 1/2 years to achieve that look, just dragged it out and got him though a ticket.

They don't look wide enough to be 6".

I'd love a set in 12x5.5 for Mia in anthracite but they don't make them in that size

Rat look really is a bit like Marmite in my experience. Plus there seems to be a fair bit of rat look snobbery out there, with people be very judgemental about what "is" and what "isn't" Rat look. Personally I love Rat Look in all it's forms, just because it adds some variety to all the usual mini scene wax, polish and chrome etc. The fact that it means different things to different people, is what actually makes it so versatile. So whether you have a car with naturally aged patina or a just few rusty panels, some sticker bombing and a roof rack full of tat, then it still gets the thumbs up from me.

It is very hard to keep a mini looking like a proper rat without it wasting away and having structural problems. As many have said the natural petina is very hard to copy and maybe we need to find some minis in a desert somewhere with sandblasted paint and a skiff of surface rust. Too many of the forced "rat" look like the are just primered or flat paint but you need to get some of that natural sanblasting of exposed surfaces and exposure to the elements. It would take a true artist to be able recreate this instead of letting time do its work.

Here's a couple of nicely patina'd cars I've spotted over the last couple of years. You just can not fake this stuff.

There's a local 66 S for sale.... so want so bad.... $9k
Posted Image
If I hadn't spent more than that on my own car already, I would've sold mine to buy this one.

9k, that's about my quote for body work for my car. Straighten, rust, concours paint. Don't know if it's worth it for an 89 flame red to be honest.... I'd rather buy that 66 S...
