Got to be worth doing this, even if you use £15 halfords classic rather than millersIts up to you, a gasket and oil change is easier than an engine swap!!

I didn't dare post that - the 'which oil' PC brigade will be down on you like a ton of bricks! I use comma sonic and change very regularly, great deal when bought in bulk.

The assumption that the engine will indefinitely need a rebuild is a bit stupid and I'd honestly expect better from some people to assume that. Drain the oil and examine it, re-fill and change the HG. To check the head gasket do a pressure test and also complete a compression check.
You don't have to go looking for a new engine before you've even checked this one.
I don't think some people understand that, it may have 'No' oil in it but there will still be oil in there, in the crank as well. Not a-lot but some.

It's likely full rebuild time unless you are really pally with the man with a beard on a cloud!

there's only one way to check this one, and that's with a rebuild. although indicative, the oil wont tell you what state the crank journals are in- most likely to be damaged
I suggest topping it up with oil before removing it and seeing if you've got lucky, but be aware that a rebuild is on the cards and should be something you might want to consider for the near future. Anyway, lesson learnt I suppose

Comma sonic is GOLD compared to halfrauds ;)

Agreed! I find in my MGB Gt daily driver, the halfords stuff runs at 5-8psi down on sonic after only 3-500 miles and was noticeably runnier when drained. Sadly comma have stopped doing the 25 and 125 litres drums of sonic in 20w50 so its a bit more expensive now than it used to be but still cheaper than halfords, even with a trade card.

What's in the oil is a good indicator, if there's a load of silvery metal flakes (babbitt, bearing metal) you can be certain it's rebuild time

Yep! but if the oil looks 'alright' doesn't meant it's not shagged
