Remove the stat, place it in a pan o water then heat it up until the stat opens or not a sthe cas maybe.

What year is your car and model.

The old thermostat is kaput, I've just tied it in boiling water. Dad won't let me try the new one

Talk about a hiding to nothing. Take it from me and a few others on here even new ones fail. Been there done that and got the T shirt. Its just something to check off the list.

Your Dad may not like it but honestly it does happen. if it does prove to work then happy days just a new gasket needed.

The water pump had crossed my mind! I didn't think the Thermostat stopped the flow to the heater, only the radiator!

Otherwise the heater would go from cold to hot virtually instantly rather than getting progressively warmer!

If I'm talking rubbish please shoot me down

Nope not talking rubbish thats why i said if anybody knew to correct me.

So if the thermostat works what do you suggest?

But if the temperature gauge worked you could possibly rule out or diagnose a water pump as if the water pump isn't working properly the engine is likely to run too hot

Just trying to think of an easy way to check the water pump without disturbing the system. It could just be an air lock so where the heater matrix pipework comes out and to the engine disconnect the pipe at the engine and top up with coolant. Keep the pipe as high as possible when topping it up.. Reconnect it and then try again.

It would be really good if you could seal a funnel into the end of the pipe whilst doing this and squeeze the pipe that's still attached to the car and see if any bubbles come out!

I'm going to end up driving to Yorkshire to fix it myself if its not sorted soon!

Having read through this post i have seen a few references to "push for hot". On mine you definitely pull the knob on the switch panel to get hot!

Are you pushing or pulling for hot?

And whereabouts in Yorkshire are you?
