Having read through this post i have seen a few references to "push for hot". On mine you definitely pull the knob on the switch panel to get hot!

Steve

If this is the issue I'll buy you a pint

Will he own up though ;D

We told you how to identify if your car is pull for hot or push for hot ages ago anyhow.

Did you actually check if the valve is opening then the cable moves?

Are you pushing or pulling for hot?

And whereabouts in Yorkshire are you?

Valve open so it would be pushed in inside the car. I'm in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

Yes it opens when the knob is pushed in and closes when pulled out

ignore the knob move the valve manually in the engine bay with your fingers to be sure its actually moving

when i move my knob it just moves the pipe work not the valve switch (...... ignore the innuendo can't think of a better way of saying it too drunk :P)

It's not just something daft like a kinked hose is it? Heater air locks can be very stubborn indeed but usually when you have one there is heat available from the heater briefly when you switch it on with a warm engine, but the heater output then rapidly cools back down. It may well simply be sludged up. if water can't flow it would take ages for the pipes to warm up by conduction alone. If you disconnect both heater hoses in the engine bay, can you blow through it? (DO NOT drink any anti-freeze, it's extremely dangerous!)

When you pulled off the hose with the valve open did some coolant spill out of the valve?

I don't think so because me and my dad tried another heater unit with the new matrix in and all the water drained and since then no water has been through the pipes at all and he disconnected and blew through the pipes after we drained it

What do you know about the history of the car? Did the previous owner mention anything about replacing the engine at all?
