Im not sure whether 'Slips' is the right word but it makes a loud noise upon the changing into 4th gear. Is there a simple way to fix this within the gear box.

Thanks
Any help appreciated.

Guessworks will be along in a moment, unfortunately with Automatics, there's a lot of precision mechanics. When was the last oil change? Have you tried changing the oil out, running and changing again to remove anything suspicious?

To answer your question yes the oil has been changed but there's no harm in doing it again to look for any problems. Thanks for the reply.

Just had a read up here: http://www.austinmem...2A/page172.html which also provides some very nice diagrams showing the route of each gear to the wheels.

It would suggest there's a problem with the Top and Reverse clutch engaging, but that is simply eye-balling from your original post.

Does it clunk into gear or flare ?

Does it do this in D (auto) or if you use the manual and go from 3rd to D (4th) ?

How exactly are you checking the level ?

This is very important and often done incorrectly.

Forgot to ask, does it tie up in 2nd to 3rd up only ?

Tie up is probably best described as similar to applying the handbrake :-(

It works fine when moving up gears manually but when in 'D' it makes a loud noise upon entering 4th gear

Thanks

Yes it basically revs high upon entering 4th gear for around 5 seconds then returns to normal I'm just concerned that it might turn into something worse.

Can I jsut get this straight..

If you change using the "stick" it goes into top ok without flare ?

But in auto mode it flares into top ?

Is that correct ?

If so it is most likely avalve body issue, remove, partial strip (NEVER PERFORM A FULL VALVE BLOCK STRIP) and clean in parafin, change the parafin and clean until it runs clear, use a tooth brush and do NOT turn it over keep the clips to the top, only remove the top cover, seperation plate don't loose the little flat steel valve, I'll try to add some photos.

Step 3, The "flap" valve is the little flat metal strip between the 2nd and 3rd sub assemblies.
