Could be a simple case of the selecter linkage itself needing a refurb ?
Atleast it had an oilchange
(Hope you smeared oil on the filter rubber seal ?)

well i think I've got her running sweeter... although im going to get the colourtune kit to make sure i havent made it too lean!!
OK so i Replaced the fuse wire behind the carb!! but the first photo has a slice out of it and im wondering if this is why my Tempurature guage has stopped working ?? I REALLY MISS MY GUAGE!! i feel its the most important one!!
any help is appreciated... theres no diagnostics in the Haynes for no temp gauge !!

Sorry for the late reply ive been reading everybody elses projects and not my own lol
bought the checkmate up in North Devon.
Now then... i had a small list of things that are bugging me.
1. the N/S Headlamp (sealed unit) is dimmer than the O/S!! ive changed it with a spare 2 i had laying around and they are all the same!! i will get hold of a voltmeter and see what the squiggles are doing... but has this happened to anyone before ?? common wiring fault ??
2. ive lost my bloody heater gauge!! No idea how/where/why but i need it back!! is there just one electrical heat sensor ? a wire to the guage and a guage ??
3. fuel guage is faulty, a new sender would that sort that ??

Look's good filbey. Our lights have the same problem, not sure why though. I would have thought the sender unit has gone, pretty easy to do with a near empty tank.

i thought that was going to be the easiest job

When temp gauge and fuel gauge both stop working, that could well be the voltage stabilizer gone.
Check by earthing the senders if they work, green-black wire at the fuel tank is the sender for the fuel gauge, green-blue at the cylinder head near to the thermostat is the sender for the temp gauge.

Bad news little guidance needed maybe ??
i lent my little brother my checkmate to get to and from his army base and hes melted the engine!! im sure its not terminal but i think i can chase the problem for the overheating or just swap it for the 1098 i have in the garage. ??
now while the 1098 is still out i thought i can replace any of the hard to reach items that might not be 100% new oil ect so whenits in its had a mini service and should run better. with minimal risk of having to pull it again for some time. :?
heres my Shopping list so far...
Clutch kit
full engine gasket set
oil filter
sump copper washer
oil
oil valve and spring
spark plugs
i will get on here what the engine number is so we can work out if i need anything else....

Melted a standard 998? Do a compression test first, its probably just the headgasket gone.
