Unfortunately the pipe to the oil cooler burst some years back whilst doing about 90 in the overtaking lane. Smoke filled the car and the motorway. I had to drive it "dry" as switching the engine off and coasting on the M4 at night isn't very sensible - especially when the steering lock engages.
Got it to the hard shoulder and turned off.
After much heartache I repaired the pipe and expected the worst. However - the engine fired up and everything was great. You can't beat those A-series'
Point is - the whole engine bay got a good coating of black oil - right up to the under-bonnet.
Big thanks for all the advice - especially your write-up, tigger99! I had to ask the question about which way the nut goes - I'd hate to be tightening a tight nut.
I'll have a go and see what happens! Ta.
