For that i would seriously consider looking on ebay for good quality second hand bikes, yes there second hand and may need a cable here and a lube up there but you're buying into something thats worth its weight in gold, the bike of mine i posted on page one i think costs around £500-£600 brand new, i bought it for £150 off of ebay for getting into and around town as busses ect... were too expensive and didn't go were i wanted to so perfect for the job and i,ve just got back from college on it and its never miss a beat, i need a new cable for the front gear change but thats only down to the cable splitting, i bike shop owner told me he didn't want to even know of these cheap argos and tesco type bikes, he turns them away because there just not good enough to be able to set up correctly, and once you do they alter and need adgustment soon after, not his exact words mind so not bothering going into detail.

Atleast with a 2nd hand good manufacturers bike you know parts are available and well made too

Cliff

If it's quite flat a single speed would be good very low maintenance and cheaper to buy in the first place
