The problem is, at £50-80 an hour, costs are going to mount up!
If you were closer I'd lend a hand, but I don't have an engine crane! You can hire them relatively cheap tho

We may be able to supply and fit for a fair price, I will have a word with the lads and let you know. If we can do it, can you get the car to Dartford? Not too far away.

Where's Darftord? I'm based in central London now far this that from me?
Picco, if you dont mind travelling to Essex, my mate Dan will do an engine swap for you for a very reasonable price. Providing you provide the replacement 998 for him, he'll be happy to do it for a good price.

This reply relates to Minimaxie; what type of engine would your friend Dan swap mine with? And would the price entail removing existing and replacing engine? How good is he's engine?
He said that you would need to source an engine for him to swap

We would source a standard A+998 engine for you complete with gearbox. we would then fit the engine and box as a complete unit. this does not however guarantee that the final drive/speedo drive would suit your speedometer or indeed the condition of the gearbox. Or, we could fit an engine that you buy elsewhere but again there would be no guarantee a match to your speedometer.
Depending on the condition of your existing gearbox, we could fit your box to another engine, but i suspect that there will be some damage to your gearbox due to the lack of oil and contamination in the gearbox as it shares the oil with the engine.
However we do this there will be some sort of risk as to condition of either or both engine and gearbox.
Our preferred way forward would be for you to source the replacement and we install it for you. otherwise we source an engine and gearbox and you take your chances on the condition. Whichever way, it would cost you about the same and i expect it would be in the range of £500 to £600 ready to drive.
If you are looking for something guaranteed to be exactly what you need and in known good condition, i am afraid you will be looking at costs similar to what you have already been quoted locally.
I hope this helps.

If you want to sell you may be better off selling it as is, put up some pictures in the valuations section on here of its condition and any rust issues and that will tell you how much it is worth (bear in mind its not a great time to sell as summer is nearly over but a new engine would make a good winter project )
