I'm currently trying to find my first mini. Its totally insane what people are asking, people are literally expecting the money they've invested back. I've seen a few over the last few months. I've got around £3000 to spend and have seen some great mini's out there but have been beaten to the punch a few times. Went to see one the other day and from the pics it looked great, but in person was a complete bag of crap. Needed new subframe, rust everywhere, interior was awful, engine was running like a bag of spanners the list goes on.....wanted £3300 with no offers. I'd would have given £1200 tops. If it was a fiesta in the same condition you'd be lucky to get 400 beans.

Matt are you that naïve to think somebody is not going to try it on, BMW have just been accused in China of selling parts at inflated prices ( because they could get away with it ). Apparently to build 1 BMW car out of buying new parts is the equivalent cost of 12 cars. Since this has been brought to BMW attention and the Chinese publics attention , they are now slashing their prices on parts in China by 40%.

 

If you placed an ad for parts on say eBay and you accidently put a highly inflated price, but it sold quickly would you not try that intentionally again.....that's business.

true so true.

business! and that is what make people rich.

No one is forcing any one else to buy there items.

I thought the originals were chrome not stainless ???

 

 

The 'experts' on the Mk1 Forum seem to confirm they were made from stainless.

"The only Minis which had the stainless steel trims on were early Coopers and the Mini "Supers" which were introduced at the same time and had the same level of trim. The early Elfs/Hornets also had it. When the "Super" ceased production (1962?) the "Super-deluxe" was introduced and the first of these also received this trim but only for a short time. I don't recall seeing any Mini produced after 1963 which had it fitted from new. The Super-deluxe and Cooper models were then fitted with a single length of plastic trim of the same ribbed profile.
I think early vans and probably "basic" model saloons had a painted mild steel finisher for a while. I think this also stopped in the early 1960s and was replaced by the more plain plastic trim on those models.
It might be possible to identify which trim your car had by looking at the steel wheelarch flanges of the body. The stainless steel trims were secured by several pop-rivets and the holes will still be there on a car which had them. The plastic trim was secured only by one at each end of the car."

2 examples I've come across this week.....

 

I was in the paint suppliers buying....er, paint for the Mayfair, just generally talking minis, he tells me he's got a 'countryman with all the wood' in his yard in Liverpool, ok it belonged to someone else but it had a tree growing through the engine and the seats were on the ground the floor was so rotten.

 

I asked if it might be for sale, he said me'd be willing to sell it for parts, 3 'phone calls later and he offered it to me for £450.  I enquired about paperwork etc and heard nothing after that except a clubman estate turning up on Ebay with a buy it now price of £800.....with a tree growing out of the engine, the seats on the floor and in Liverpool....spooky!  But it wasn't a countryman.

 

No, I didn't click the buy it now.....

 

Second example is a rough but not irretrievable Riley Elf shell sitting atop a container in my local scrapyard.  The back story is that the bloke they bought it off had purchased it from a bloke who'd stripped it down with the intention of 'doing it up' then losing interest.  Two weeks after the new buyer collected all the bits and pieces (and the promise of the documents) the original seller topped himself.

 

Leaving an Elf with no paperwork or plates on.  It's reputed to have a number plate worth BIG money on it but I've no idea how they know this with no ID.....

 

Anyway, they've applied for the new log book from the VIN number so they can get the original reg transferred onto a relatives car.  Goodness knows what they'll do with the shell.  OK it needs work but I've seen worse.  His other idea is stick an engine in the back and make it into a ministox, the parts will be sold off for a profit.

 

Shame really.

I thought a car had to be mot'ed to transfer a reg ?

Not unless you can prove that you have owned the car for a certain length of time.

 

I never knew that also until a discussion about it last week!

It has to be taxed, or in a position to be taxed, which means it will need an MOT, or be a pre-1960 vehicle which no longer needs an MOT.

I've known of cases where the owner of a 'banger' with a valuable plate just 'borrows' a similar roadworthy car for a day, swaps the plates over to get an MOT /tax then transfers the old reg number. Not sure if that is still possible with computerisation, etc but it was certainly quite a common method 'in the trade' a few years back.......many years ago I bought a Mini 'barn find' which had only recently lost its original number but had a current MOT even though it had been off the road for 20+ years with seized engine and brakes ! The seller had only bought it for the number and at that time it ended up with a '63 A Reg.

Am I right in thinking you can take the reg if you scrap the vehicle though? Lots of old bikes and scooters went that way afaik with no need to mot them, just tell the seller you are an enthusiast so he will let you buy it as many wouldnt let them go if they knew they were going to the crusher just for a reg number that is probably still for sale 10 years later.

I thought the reg would go back to the dvla , who then might sell it .
