Has the leading edge of the bonnet rusted - the wing front edge - rear arch - all areas to keep an eye on

if you have to replace the head lights - they were for another car as well - we used to get them as the ford ones were £xpensive

(can't remember what car thou)

all ways got a slight shudder when accelerating hard (prop)

hope it gives you years of pleasure

Bonnet is perfect, wing front edges similar but other bits of wings need looking at. Rear arch is the major headache as it's been the scene of one of the worlds worst repairs. Accelerating hard isn't an option, the engine is running so badly it can't be doing 0-60 in less than 30 seconds.

on the list of jobs, but need to get to the bottom of the rough running first. I think it is just in need of a damn good service and setup so that will happen first.

I have always liked the Capri, particularly the first model out (Mark 1?) . They were sold over here not as Ford but as Mercury. They were not particularly popular back then and next to impossible to find these days.

I used to change hundreds over the years - IIRC the black ones are faulty - blue ones better - I think - been a long time ?

as above splash bar (I worked for kent cams in the 80's (1 summer)) we re-profiled thousands

wonder if there is a electronic points conversion for them - must be

also inlet manifold sometimes prone to leaks

also porous float on VV carb - constant rich mix - & the infamous auto choke

I always liked the pintos - but a lot of people hated them

setting tappets was awkward , cam cover leaked unless you knew what you were doing

cam belts died at random moments (1.6 valves usually hit , 2.0 miss)

splash bar clogged , vv carb on some was poor , but on the whole a robust engine - in my opinion

anyone else prefer the 4 sp box over the 5sp - in the capri 1.6 2.0 ?

welcome to the Capri forum ;D

(I would have mine back in a heart beat (in the same condition - probably a washing machine now))

still remember putting the hex drive in the head bolts - tapping them to displace the oil & spraying oil everywhere

1986 (D reg) last production year ? - have seen new ones - later registered ones

Im pretty sure the Capri was fitted with a twin choke webber, VV carbs being fitted to Mk3 Escorts & Granada's. Could be wrong tho. All mine had webbers.

a lot were fitted with VV carbs from new (mk3) -- most were changed to weber later on (1.6 & some 2..0)

usual thing was a manual choke first - then a complete carb change

twin choke weber was/is a lot better

A day in and I think I may end up selling this one. The plan was to whack a 3.0l in and play but the more I find out the more I think it would be criminal to mess with it. Its a rare car in a rare colour and pretty much untouched apart from a bodged wheel arch repair. Really unsure what to do, whatever happens I will do it up nice but I am not one for leaving cars totally standard and it would be such a shame to mess with this. Or do I keep what could be a real head turner but slow as anything?

Normally you get cars and they turn out worse than you expected, not better! Life is never simple.

personally, i think you should 'mess' with it, or sell now and buy 'nother to mess with.  :D

let's say you do decide to sell though, the next owner might just mess with it ?
