I had 2 of these - a horrible light blue 1.6 that was just diabolical in every way but i bought it because i drove all the way to wales so thought i had to (and it was only £350), then a mint black 2 litre laser that i spent years driving and upgrading. it finished off with recaros and the 13 inch seven spoke wheels (i forget what they are called) always alwaysalways regret selling that car. I sold for £800. God only knows how much it would be worth now.
I say rover v8. if your going to the trouble of swapping in the essex v6 then it wont be much more difficult to get v8 in there and i think you'll hanker for it later on if you dont have it. upgraded suspension and brakes and leave it stock looking. It will be a stealthy thing of beauty.

A more or less complete cossie engine would be between £1500-£2500 , ans then you will find out the turbo's goosed etc etc , the wiring is old and knackered etc . A lot of knicked stuff a round to .

well out of my budget then. I keep changing my mind about every five minutes. I will get the bodywork sorted and the other issues then look at engines. Unless something comes up before then of course. Got a feeler out for a 3l Essex from a mate of a mate so will see what that brings.A more or less complete cossie engine would be between £1500-£2500 , ans then you will find out the turbo's goosed etc etc , the wiring is old and knackered etc . Don't suppose anyone knows if 2.0 and 3.0 engines fit straight on to type C gearboxes?

I think they are only weak if you are running 180bhp plus . I do know that the bolt pattern is all the same so will line up . Get a Burton cateloge or go on there site , loads of tuning information for free!

Only thing I am not sure of is that it seems to clunk a bit from the front on full lock. Drivers side tyre is very unevenly worn. I am guessing wheel bearings need checking first but beyond that I am a bit unsure. It sounds like a FWD driveshaft clunk.

Cosworth V6, fit that to a 2.8i special Type 9 and happy days. The type 9 can handle power but will need monies spent on it to do so. T5 would be better.
I converted my RS2000 from 4 speed to 5 Speed. The biggest issue with the Type 9 box is to ensure the 5th gear is immersed in oil otherwise it will wear very very quickly. So jack the car up as far as you can on the filling port side and fill to spill.
My RS had 160 bhp and the box handled that very well.

A very productive morning. I am suffering from a major back problem so was relegated to carrying tea and pointing at stuff going 'undo that, fiddle that, NO NOT THAT ONE!!!!!!, etc. with a couple of hours playing the engine is running sweet as a nut, still a it of smoke on start up but sure that's the valve stem seals. Then looked at the brakes, first port of call is the notoriously leaky rear cylinders. Drivers side was leaking, but only a bit, passenger side was peeing out. At £5 a side plus £11 for the shoes that's what I call a result. Just need to get them ordered. Also bought a complete interior for £31 off fleabay and found it was pretty much mint when my mate dropped it off to me.

My money is on the TCA's otherwise known a track control arm bushes. Chances are, if they have been worn for some time, the ball joint will be shot. Get heavy duty arms and poly bushes. Cheap ish to sort. The main way to tell if the y are fudges is chronic juddering under braking, cause the front of the car to feel like its about to fall off lol.

Thanks, will get it all stripped out when I get a chance. At the moment the brakes are so poor I doubt they could stop a flea let alone get it juddering. And it was being used as a daily driver!A very productive morning. No probs Clive. If you wanted to upgrade while you were at it, you can fit the front ARB with one from a 2.8i. You will need tca's, bushes ant roll bar and cups. Much better than the current set up.
If you do change the arms, a tip when re-fitting, is to ratchet strap the ARB in at each end. It makes getting the holes in the tca's lined up with the ones in the front legs of the chassis
