either way I will sort it out, the point of buying it was to restore it. The only difference will be what I do under the bonnet. First plan was always to try and get it running smoothly anyway so I won't be doing anything I wouldn't be. Just don't know what to do, it's gorgeously original in the way people dream of, but I know I get bored when a car is 'finished' so standard is not my thing really. I could just get it running well and fleabay it and look for a ratty 3.0 but who knows what I will do. It just came up at the right time and I doubt I will ever find another like this.personally, i think you should 'mess' with it, or sell now and buy 'nother to mess with.
let's say you do decide to sell though, the next owner might just mess with it ?

I would put a bored out 2l in it - big valve head & nice hot cam , janspeed exhaust (if they still make them)
side draft carb - not sure what would be the best
burton used to do nice pinto's - may be a bit £xpensive , fish net recardos ,
but make it look like a standard 1.6 - drop the nose a tiny bit
black the rear lights a tad (not too much)
make it a proper 80's sleeper
I would go daft & put an auto in it - just to be different
your car - do what you want

I have done a few V8 conversions in the past. So easy to do, kits available for engine mounts and gearbox rear mouunt. IIRC, its only 2 oro 3 wires for the electronc ignition.
Fit a 4 barrel holley carb and jobs a good un. The V8 weighs less than the pinto!

Wondering if it has the VV carb - if it has get a weber , or at least new chewing gum diaphram

I used to change hundreds over the years - IIRC the black ones are faulty - blue ones better - I think - been a long time ?
as above splash bar (I worked for kent cams in the 80's (1 summer)) we re-profiled thousands
wonder if there is a electronic points conversion for them - must be

also inlet manifold sometimes prone to leaks
also porous float on VV carb - constant rich mix - & the infamous auto choke

Just spent the last hour looking at rover v8 engines on fleabay. I also happen to have a spare 1.8 mx5 engine and box taking up space in the garage, only 135bhp but loads of space under the bonnet to go FI. Decisions decisions.
Do it!! V8 would be awesome British mustang :0)

After a few days fiddling I am getting to the point that there is no way I am selling this one. Its mint where it counts. I can't live with the 1.6 though. So options are: 3.0 Essex (waiting to hear back from a mate who where there is one that has been breathed on), a 3.5 v8 - what's not to love? Or a 2.0 zetec, cheap and powerful. I guess it will come down to what comes at the right price at the right time.
There must be loads of 2 litre zetecs. You can run megajolt on them too

they are dirt cheap. £100 ish for a silver OP, or spend £250 and get a free Mondeo shaped delivery system. With 1.6l on the back it would make a superb sleeper. There must be loads of 2 litre zetecs. As much as a zetec is a good idea because they are cheap and plentiful , my opinion is that a capri should be grunty 2valve , instead of high revving . The 3.0 essex is dirt cheap , ok change the timing gears and get some 2nd hand heads , a cheap 2nd hand four barrel and your laughing.
Edit , you can always get a cheap scimetar gte and sell what you dont need

4 pot Cosworth? Seen a few of these. Easy to do using T5 box.
