Calgibb, as Dusky suggested, if you could post a video of what is happening it would be very helpful.

Yes I am absolutely sure because I had to correct the firing order after a mate who had no clue what he was doing decided to mess about while I was busy working on other bits.
Why do we need to dispel any thoughts of an issue with the cam... As the cam is rotating you can see the push rods pushing the valves to open at the wrong time in comparison to the piston so I do not understand how a crack or a head gasket issue would cause this problem. Obviously that could be another problem down the line but I doubt it's the gasket, the old one appeared in working order but the new one has been in 2 days and the engine hasn't worked in order to destroy it.

So the valves on 1 and 4 open as they should, but not 2 and 3 ?

Yes that is correct, with 1 being the closest to the radiator.

I will see if i can get a video if it later tonight!

Yes the engine is being turned the correct way, we thought that could have been the issue early on.

Unfortunately the mechanic got taken away with other work so the test may be done tonight!

Bring piston no1 up to TDC on the firing stroke with the rotor arm pointing at 1 o'clock position and lets see a picture of the rockers

tell me where you can get a cam that would fit an A series but not work with an A series head?

Maybe this one? https://www.minispar...c/C-AEG286.aspx

Yes. And as the inlet and exhaust are swapped on 2 and 4 it would still not give the perceived problems not to mention a 300 quid custom order cam...

Ok so Carbon has sparked a theory with me (i may be miles off), after digging around on google it appears that some 8 port heads do not actually run the valves in the same order that a standard head would so instead of it being Exhaust Inlet Inlet Exhaust Exhaust Inlet Inlet Exhaust it is Exhaust Inlet  Exhaust Inlet Exhaust Inlet Exhaust Inlet (on the 8 port) so if this is the case then the camshaft would need to be different to run the valves correctly. So my theory is that the could my camshaft be an 8 port with a standard style head causing the wrong valves to open.

Please bear in mind this is a theory and i have no knowledge about 8 port engines and very limited mini knowledge!

As said. If it ran. It could not have a 8 port cam in it.

Also you would have noticed that the head had been changed.

And there is no way I would leave a 300 quid cam in an engine if I was keeping the head.

Still waiting for the video.

He did say it was running fine but i don't see how this issue could have developed in transit or while i was installing the engine as i didn't change anything that i think could have effected it all.

If i was closed?

Maybe the guy who sold me it didn't know what it was?

I am working on the video

Also even if it had a 8 port cam in it you would still get compression I just would not run well. The reason is the valves still need to be closed at the same time.

this thread is getting painful to read, your MECHANIC isn't otherwise he would know what's wrong with the engine in about ten minutes.
