Feeling guilty at all the mods from standard which are creeping in to this car, I decided to replace the relatively recent Kenwood CD player for the OE Rover in-car entertainment system.

Say hello to the mighty Philips R361 cassette radio. No push-button tuning or auto- reverse - but hey its got balance and tone controls!;

Connected to the original pod speakers on the parcel shelf it'll be 10w of pure analogue coolness !

A successful weekend on the car this week.
I sorted out the clutch hydraulics and finally got the engine to run nicely.

Some tips learned the hard way for anyone else doing clutch slave and master servicing ;

1. If replacing the flexi hose, fit  the banjo to the slave cylinder  BEFORE remounting the cylinder.
2. The master cylinder cotter pin is easier to get back in if you super-glue it to a stick.
3. A 9/16 AF cranked ring spanner cut in half is very handy for the rearmost slave cylinder bolt.

4. Be careful when removing the master cylinder cotter pin. If you drop it ,it will likely go down behind the soundproofing in the footwell necessitating some annoying removal! :D

Turned out the running problem was as simple as a dodgy spark plug. Of course I checked for literally all other possibilities before considering this!

I've never had a new plug malfunction before but you live and learn.

Meanwhile in bodywork dept. the boot lid is coming on ok. I need to get it back on the car for MOT day so this is now priority.

Yes i know its jus a bog standard engine bay - but it now looks 'serviceable' with some nice new ancillaries.

- and best of all it now sounds like a 998 and not like a tractor.

Did you manage to get your paint sorted?

Yes thanks I purchased paints 4 u as recommended in here. It went on well and I liked the fan spray pattern of the aerosols. Colour match seems good.

I am gathering parts to enable a dashboard swap back to the original 3 clock binnacle type -

Can anyone confirm this (from ebay)  is the correct type please?

OK great so I might be all right moving the clocks I already have (above)  straight onto a new binnacle. I thought they wouldn't fit.

So the clocks I have are very probably the originals - Certainly the mileage seems to correspond with the cars history.
Thanks Steve.

Sonscar above shows what we had in ours. It has simpler graphics on the dials than your ones which look slightly earlier.

Another step forward today- then two steps back. Went for an MOT.

The car failed on a split steering rack gaiter. I've not done that job before and I know it can be a pain but overall I'm pleased with that result. If I can source the parts we might be in action next weekend.

It was serious fun actually driving the car at last. Well worth the £19 on its own!

Thanks Rob. Yes I prefer the simpler type too. The other ones can go back on eBay. As Wingnut says, they seem to be off a 1987 Mayfair.

There seems to be two types (lengths) of steering gaiter available.
Anyone know how I can work out which one I need?

Believe that all the steering rack is genuine on my 90 Flame Red and it has the 4.5" gaiters fitted.
If you don't want to do this job too often (due to bad rubber out there...even from good suppliers) I'd fit the Valtain high quality steering rack gaiters 5" long-pair from Somerford Mini. They cost but the best on the market for quality
