I've done it myself. My 1990 now has a 1978 reg, but on the logbook it is still a 1990.

Many 1963 cars had registration numbers without a suffix and it is quite possible that the old switcheroo was done to get a valuable registration off the 1963 car which was not in a fit state to get an MOT.

It's not always about a bit of free road tax.

As long as it's actually road legal from a safety perspective, do what you want. I don't obsess over how others register their cars. Just make sure it drives straight and stops straight. Every day I see cars badly maintained, who knows what goes through their minds? old or bald tyres, cracked windscreen, tints, weed smoke billowing out the window, kids in the back, no laws for them seem to help. A well maintained tax dodging ringer is still preferable in my eyes. Keep calm and carry on

As I've said for years, There is two/three simple ways to stop the tax exempt ringing of newer minis. Like 1960's tax exempt sportpacks for example.

Scrap the tax emption complexly and tax how it would have been before the emption, meaning there isn't the cash saving on tax dodging. Or you can keep the tax exemption, but with the conditions that the vehicle is to only be used on set days or weekends etc.

Or scrap road tax complelety and put it on the fuel, you probably wouldn't even need to add much. And unless you drive off without paying for the fuel would be harder to ovoid not paying. That way you drive more you pay more, if you have a poorly maintained vehicle with crap mpg you pay more or fix/replace it with a more economical vehicle. And unlike the current tax system if a foreigner comes over hear and uses out roads (witch we pay for) when they fill up, they too will be paying something back for using our roads.

I'd go for paying and extra 5p per litre if it got rid of tax. That would mean these people with 5ltr V8s that do 4.5 miles to the gallon would pay loads more.

Another option would be to introduce road tolls as in France for their well maintained motorways and they have no road tax for private cars.

Sod that, that would just create queues and tailbacks. It's bad enough here when we do have to pay tolls.

You only have to look at the m6 toll to see how that would work...

No queues if you use this electronic tag on the windscreen as I do whenever in France.......

Beat the French toll lane queues with Sanef Toll Tag
