Could always get a 998, and a 850 crank, as long as you can find somewhere where you can get "blank" thrust bearings, that you can machine to suit the engine, you'll have a square engine

Aye, I've thought about this more than once, its a very interesting idea. Should give you a nice high revving torquey engine I believe. I'm saving it for when I get enough workshop space to experiment with stuff.

And sticking with a 998 because insurance is cheap is a bit of a non-point. A 998 with 100bhp will cost a fair bit more for insurance than a 1275 with 100bhp.

How many insurance companies actually take the engine apart to inspect it?? Catch me drift Jammy?

you have a smash, they will rip it to bits. do you think they are that stupid? if an insurance company can worm out of paying you anything, you can be damn sure they will.

most likly if your in a crash, it would be a lot easier to pay the extra insurance and then you wont have to change everything if you crash

hello pie, well like to firstly say fair play to you. I used to run a funky thou and regret going bigger as you lose that rev ability! So thats why when i build my pickup i will be sticking with the thou. As my old thou i had tried a 12G940 head on it with standard cam and it went well. Could keep up with the big boys round the lanes just had to pile on the revs. That engine is sat in my workshop and the bottm end is still solid as the day it was built and i've blown head gaskets. Ran it round on three cylinders the lot. Run it with a weber and still got a ton out of it on the motor way! So who said you need big motors, anyway you can have the biggest engine you like but if you cant drive then it's no use! Might as well be driving a 850! Now thats a rev happy engine. Plus the 998 was good enough for the works team! Just need to take a look at there results. Oh you fixed your head light yet!

Pie, All I Can Say Is Good Luck With The 100hp Build - I Know It Can Be Done But Definatly At Expense...
However Thinking Of Fiddling The Insurance Company About The 100hp 998 Is A Bad Idea, Seriously Think Again About That.
You Have Now Openly Admitted On The Internet Of Thinking About Being Dishonest And Lieing About The Engine, Not A Smooth Move. I Personally Know How High Insurance Is, But It's Not Worth Taking A Risk. And As Minivanman Says; They Will Rip The Car To Pieces, Regardless.

Pie there is something seriously messed up in your head im sure!
yes a 998 is capable of doing a 100bhp... but i dont understand why a 998....
yes okay its a revvy engine... but surely a 1275 with a lightened flywheel is equally as revvy?

and also.. if you can get an engine out of a smashed up mini in 30 mins... ill eat my own socks. Better still ill eat one of jammys used socks.

and sorry to kinda annoy everyone but why are you coming across as being better than the rest of the forum... bold lettering and i quote

after all i AM The Forum Pie

Lets keep this a bit more civil please. If you don't like what someone is doing then you DON'T HAVE to post. If its breaking forum guidelines however, report it to a moderator and let them deal with it.

pie,it has been done a fair few times, insurance feel there is a non standard engine in the car, and pay to have it stripped! if it means paying £600 for it to be stripped than pay £30k for the death of some one you killed, they will and then not pay, and you'llbe left with a stuffed car and the person you killed family on your case! keep the car legal and tell them, if your honest with them, they might even surprise you and come up with a good price, extra £50 a year or the fact your insurance will be invalid and there for illegal. i'm not having a go but that is what is boosting everyones insurance up........ even alloy wheels, that can invalidate your insurance if you don'ttell them............ it will be good to see you getting 100bhp, gives me a few ideas if i fancy doing a 998 again, good luck!

A great challenge trying to achieve 100bhp from a 998. Individual as well, it makes a refreshing change from just jumping up the "cc" ladder. I would not though undisclosed anything from the insurance companies this is a really bad idea especially if you end up paralyzing some one and then your insurance is void... how is that person going to get funding to live there on? Just an example anyway.
Some insurance companies won't charge more on a fully modified 998 producing 100bhp to a 1275 fully modified producing 100bhp. I have done the quotes myself!

Monkey Matt- the amount an engine revs in proportional to the crank throw (as well as many other things) but not the mass of the flywheel. A lighter flywheel will not make an insignificant difference at top end, all it will do is help acceleration in the lower gears.
