In my experience the best oil to use is 20/50 engine oil, it's what my 3 minis and my mates 5 minis run with

Sounds very much like it's the points that have closed up. I would advise buying a Haynes manual on the mini, they have so.ple step by step instructions on many maintenance jobs like points.
It's all the fun of mini ownership ?

Standard Points or converted to electronic ignition?
If points, have you checked to make sure they are correctly adjusted/gapped and checked the condenser.

How can you tell like I said I’m new to all of this haha

It's pretty easy to do as long as you've got a screwdriver and a set of feeler gauges.

And a bit of reading which may be of help.

For the condenser, check the wire isn't broken.

Good luck.

Hello taken my carb off today which I have found out is a HS4 and the jet assembly doesn’t return to sitting flush with the bottom of the carb is that something I should be concerned about?

I think it has been converted because there is a little black box where the points should be

Sounds like it's electronic ignition so should be ok unless there's a broken wire or the module has gone.

When you say 'flush with the bottom of the carb,', in what way? Are you talking...dash pot off, needle out and looking in? If so, it's just been adjusted. Try turning the jet adjustment screw to bring it flush then give two complete turns (12 flats) down. That should be a good starting point for fuel mixture.

I may have missed it but are you getting a spark?

I was but now I’m not I’m not sure if I’ve messed something up, I’ve got the other half’s grandad coming round tomorrow to have a look at it as he has built a few mini’s in his time

Wouldn’t it be multiple valves though as it’s 1&2 instead of just one?
