I would be interested to know for definite from someone who has actually done it just how much it would cost to build a bmw headed engine from scratch.

I have nothing at all against them, don't get me wrong I think its an absolutely ingenious conversion, i just have a feeling that the final cost might not be a million miles away from the kad engine (which has 20 years of development behind it and is tried and tested)

The kad head comes with huge chambers to begin with, so that you can run the pistons near the top of the bore. Depending on what CR you want you get the head skimmed to suit, mine came with a 50thou skim from the factory for an 11.5 to 1 compression, i've just had it skimmed and the pistons machined for 13 to 1.

I don't recall calling the bike head conversion that, but I guess thats what it is :w00t:

Still, it does the business thats for sure!

Sounds like a great plan, 16v is the way forward I think. If you still wanted to rally and you went for a 1425 then with a supercharger it would give you 1995cc, so still in the under 2000cc class. Would still be up against some awesome machines though

If I could afford a KAD head id go for it, looks so tasty sat underneath the bonnet. I know someone selling one as well but it cant find £3k to buy the engine off him, dammit

Dan - the bmw twin cams don't come in the same ballpark for cost as the kads. I'll have to tot the cost of the demo cars engine up and my crazy gold one - but they are nowhere near 9k or 15k for both of them!!

looking foward to seeing how your build comes along - brave going for a colour change!

My gold one should be back together in a month or less hacking the evo fraternity off.lol!

the big news though is that the demo car clubby (1293 BMW twin cam 8v fuel injected/fast road spec) has been on the rollers today for mapping - If I can figure it out I'll pop the pics of the curve up - if not they'll be on the turbominis site! - if you're at Brighton pop over for a look at it and a chat

sorry for thread hi jack - give us some pics of the Z cars set up whe nyou get it Dan?

cheers

John

Sorry for the hijack peeps :w00t:

John, i'm surprised to be honest, assuming the same bottom end and assuming your average joe on the street (and not somebody with the facilities to carry out all the machine work themselves  ) I wouldn't have thought there was that much in it, or at least not as much as people would think.

After all 4 grand gets you everything you need to turn your 1275 into a kad 16 valver. Would it really be that much less by the time you've paid for the block to be redrilled, machined blah blah whatever else needs to be done to fit one?

I will of course eat humble pie when we finally meet as your car will be significantly faster than mine :) :)

Dan

iv been at the pub :w00t: right anyway yeah dan if i plan to charg it ill need to get the compression down so obviously the bigger the chambers the better

who loves the mini: i was told that with the 70% cc increase or what ever it was (i was told iv not worked it out myself or asked about) that would be over 2litre unless that car was before a certain age, if it was id be in the 1600 and over class, unfortunatly the mini is a 93 (hence my name) so thats not possible...i think im gona just build the car how i want it and try to find a race groupe i can slide in without changing too much because most of all i want the mini hw i want and not just to get past regulations

im not sure if that 70% is for all rallying but in our next events regulations it said turbocharged engines have their capacity multiplied by 1.7 (70% increase) so a 1430 would then be 2430! This is for turbocharged engines but im assuming supers will be similar. Also this might not be the same for all rallying just the event we're doing so might be worth looking into more.

Ah i see, i was working on multiplying it by 1.4 which is for hillclimbs but I guess every event is different. Using 1,4 gives you 1995cc which would allow you to slide in to the 1600-2000 class but it all depends on what type of racing you want to do.

Could always just go for the extreme mighty minis, anything goes with them as long as its mini shape
