nice to see you making progress there - lovely little heads to work with!

smoothing the "throats" out pays very large dividends on these heads.
looking forward to seeing more progress soon. cheers

i went to start decoking the ports and they are very small to work on, really the only port work iv done before is on a kent crossflow engine and thats 8 valve the ports leading up to each valve are a nice size and could easy get lil tool in there...start on the 16v head ok can get to the very entrance of the port bt when it splits for each valve...well put i like this...its gona take a while and im gona have to get a small tool

not to worry tho its gona be a while till its fitted so im better off spending my time making sure its tip top.

is there any advice about where to smooth etc or really what not to touch (other than valve seats)

Thanks for your interest

might be little different on the k1100 than the pinto engine he did while i was there...the ports really do seem small lol

im not trying to remove any material from the ports mostly... but really just take out the feel from the casting, the slightly rough one will cause lots of passing friction
i might just do it by hand in the end (in a very smutty action im sure) lol with lots n lots of emery paper then move to wet n dry and then special polishing paist they have in the diesel section

jonh K do you think the LT cams would be up for forced induction? or would custom ones be muchos better?

yes the LT cams will be really nice for forced induction as there is very little overlap to the stock cam timing - perfect for charged engines. The LT cams also have reasonable lift at 8.8mm so will work really well with a ported throat head - I'll dig some pics out for the throat areas when worked. The other essential piece of machining to have done is 3 angle valve seats. As stock the K heads have really wide valve seats but thin seat area - hence a lot of wasted material on the valve seat which does not help flow.

cheers

done a lil bit today aswell (gona run out of stuff to do soon enough :D )

riiight well did the exhaust valves tonight, they take alot longer than inlet all the carbon actualy bakes itself to the stem, used an old sharpened screwdriver and a pencle sharpener blade lol i held the stem in the chuck of the drill n spun easy to do and works well, in the end i made it nice n shiney with a bit of emmery paper and wet n drive really made it shine
again ill do the valve seats when i come to reassemble the head

Posted Image

should be able to see here how crapped up the exhaust valves get

Posted Image

can really see here what the underside is like, this can cause hotspots inside the compustion chamber leading to pinking...which we dont want!!!! at all

Did a little bit of porting on the inlet port aswell, not really finished yet i need my grinding stones so i can get in from the chamber side making very sure i dont touch the seats! They already feel so much more smoother than standard

Posted Image

can see at the back end of the port where its still rough and the casting surface

Posted Image

the standard port, all the casting marks still there, can see why the air flow could be reduced

tis all for today, i got a headache from hearing the drill yet again. hopfully ill remember to bring my griding stones home from work then i can work from the chamber side and do the rest of the ports (will have to yoink more emmery paper  )

 kinda thinking about sending the head off to be ported and gas flowed :) if i do so i know that all the ports are going to flow equaly which, of course is always a bonus
also been talking with my friend tonight about plenum chambers, throttle bodie to valve distaces and how that will effect the point of maximum torque

i was under the presumption that individual throttle bodies were prity muck useless on forced induction.
surely a single would be easier? plus if the plenum chamber has just one butterfly, surely flow would be better then there being a butterfly on each cylinder? or does it give better mixture control?

but on another point i love the project and i bet your loving the shopping.
i had a lesson the other day on plenum chambers, air box's and general airflow. was very interesting.

anyway good luck!
