Hi All

I'm pretty new here and hoping you might be able to shed some light on my problem. I have only ever owned minis my current is rare 1997 Volcano Cooper that I've had for the last 10 years.

So, with ULEZ coming into London in August I have been made aware my car is not compatible and I'm going to have to get rid of it!

I'm thinking there must be a way to lower in emissions - from Euro 3 to Euro 5. I was thinking to maybe fit a Jetex Classic Car Converter which brings the emissions down.

Any help or advice would be gratefully received and I look forward to hear what anyone here has don to save their mini!!

Thea x

I’m fairly sure it’s a type approval thing, you can’t change the Euro rating for an individual car.

To the best of my knowledge, if (and it's a big if) you could get a Mini down to the level required. My understanding is that you need to get retested annually, costs are in the £15-1800 range, each time!

This is a problem for so many with classics now. As you need the certificate of conformity from manufacturer which clearly an MPI does not hit the required euro class.

So many cars being sold so you’re in a position of sell or you’ll have to factor in the fee each trip out. Sucks.

Must be devastating for you.

I think it's coming to us all one way or another sadly.

The first thing to do is take a lump of 4x2 and beat some sense into the environazi that came up with the idea in the first place.
Second move to a city that is not being brow beaten by misguided misinformed tree huggers.
Third vote out the d!(& heads who let this happen.

You can do that for bikes but I don't think you can for cars

This is a real issue for us Mini owners, the only real way around it is that 40 year old vehicles registered as historic vehicles are automatically exempt, so that might be an option to change your beloved Mini for an older one. From what I understand even an LPG conversion doesn't help only electric and we all know how expensive they are. I am a member of London and Surrey Mini Owners Club and they are saying that this could affect the L2B Mini run in the future as its current leaving point (Cheam) will be in ULEZ next year

False number plates might help.

You could swap it for an old mini. Well "older", maybe better:

"In line with the existing LEZ discount all vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973 are exempt from the ULEZ, regardless of commercial use or otherwise."

I didn't know this till I read about Londoners buying very old cars to run. I must admit, I was surprised.

Or you could get an electric conversion, but that is not going to be cheap.

All "Historic Class" vehicles, available to any registered (currently, but it's a rolling date: ie. vehicles registered before 1st Jan '83 will qualify on 1st April '23) before 1st Jan '82 are exempt.

http://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles

£0 VED and no longer require an MOT.

Personally, I do get mine MOT'd, I prefer a second set of eyes checking.

It's, also, best to check with your Insurance Company how they feel about the MOT, or not question.

I pulled the quote from the TFL website. It refers to which cars are exempt from the ULEZ regs.

I agree wholeheartedly about the MOT issue. IfI my minis make the no MOT required age, I will still be MOTing them.
