This is what I found on front nose, nothing under gasket on cowl rain channel. IMG_20250517_131330.jpg

That looks like a reproduction chassis plate.
I've never seen a genuine 1973 chassis plate that says "Austin Morris Group" on it.

Thanks for all the input, I appreciate it.

Found it: I was wrong:
My book did say how many liters....4.83 liters or 10.2 US pints....or 8.5 UK pints

Pretty certain it's 5 litres or 8 1/2 pints (UK pints) for an engine without an oil cooler

Fill it slowly. And turn it over before it’s at the Max, to circulate in the oil filter. Then let it settle and recheck and fill accordingly

No worries.

I meant to ask, is there an engine number plate on the block?

As it might aid identification of what vehicle you actually have

Thanks for the effort to help me know what I'm driving.

As from the other posts numbers do not always mean what there is.

photos are best.

I use Castrol GTX Classic 20W-50 it has the right amount of ZDDP in it. It get pretty warm here in this part of BC we get temps the same as Vegas in the summer. I use Chevron fuel as they are the only company that has 94Ron around here. I had to put 87 in it once as that was all they had and I needed fuel badly, it ran like crap and dieseled when I shut it off.

I also use a fuel stabilizer as they now put that Ethanol junk in 94Ron in Canada. "Thanks Turdeau"

There is a Company in Alberta called Camoil who make 10W-40 and 20W-50 with the right amount of ZDDP in them they make it specially for older flat tappet engined  vehicles.

I use the Castrol as it is easier to get and I get a discount through work, otherwise I would use Camoil.

My guess it’s that the vehicle is a 1990 mainstream Cooper, with a 1973 VIN plate screwed on to it.

Could be wrong, I’d be interested to know what the engine number is.

Definitely looks after 1988 to me.

Interesting, that engine number is only 6000 further on from my old 1990 Mainstream Rover Cooper (recently sold), which was built September 1990.

So I would say that engine is late 1990, early 1991, and the shell is probably, as I said before, likely that age too.

Another thing to check is, have a look on the boot lock, it could have been replaced, but they used to stamp the week and year of manufacture.

So there should be 4 digits, i.e "42 90", meaning for week 42 of 1990, worth a look!

Considering several people on other posts said 1993 and posts here I'm going with 1990 to 1993

I posted a photo on "Real Minis Only!" and got over 1600 likes. Why so many likes I don't know or understand..

Well it’s unlikely to be post 1991, as they went single point injection in late 1991, and as you have a carburettor and as I said only 6000 on from my old carburettor engine. So it’s late 1990 or early 1991
