Please excuse this serious reply...

The magazine's journos are reporting on the event and probably want to convey the sense of fun enjoyed by the participants, it's difficult to capture fun and laughter in a magazine photo but the fancy dress will certainly help. When they're doing a feature on a car then people will want to see the car and not have it obscured by silly props.

I think they've got it about right and I appreciate their efforts when I'm stood reading their mags in WH Smiths :shifty:

let me rephrase your sentence...

When they're going to (doing) a show(feature on a car) then people will want to see the car and not have it obscured by silly props.

mmm, strange how that works, isn't it ??

No Anorak, most people will want to read about the show, not least those that went to the trouble of getting themselves in fancy dress. If people only wanted to see minis in intimate detail they could just buy a Haynes manual. The magazine is catering to the interests of Mini owners. Evidently Mini owners have an interest in enjoying themselves as well as owning minis.

Do you not think events should be more than a one brand carpark?

actually no.

what your saying is your board of going to mini shows, well when I'm board of doing something i stop doing it, i don't dress up in a stupid costume.

"the trouble of getting them selves in fancy dress" didn't you mean the troubled ones in fancy dress ???

tell you what, you guys go and do your weekly shopping in fancy dress, now that's a boring thing you have to do, so have fun and go to tesco dressed as batman.

while your there, take a look around. notice anyone looking at you strangely.

maybe some people don't "understand" the more interesting side to the mini, you know, the history, the heritage. well you guys are writing mini history, and people are going to look back and say "remember when the idiots took over the asylum ?"

you know, for the people who take the mini seriously, all this dressing up is actually quite tedious and offencive, you guys are turning an icon into a joke.

Anorak, I think you're forgetting that the mini means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Some people enjoy dressing up and having a laugh with their mates. Others enjoy walking round a field looking at rover coopers that are exactly the same. We're all different. :shifty:

firstly, what exactly has "dressing up and having a laugh with their mates" got to do with the mini ???

secondly, no two minis are the same

thirdly, believe me, i wish i could forget :)

Have to say I've never been to a mini show either in fancy dress or not. I do get stared at in Tescos quite often though :shifty:

Why do you think one has to exclude the other? I thought we liked Minis because they're fun and full of character? I don't particularly want to drive a wheeled museum exhibit.

I might add if I thought Mini shows were just dull lines of shiny cars with the car's life history and a few faded photos stuck in the window I'd never consider going.

I enjoy shows purely for the cars and to speak to owners and I love to get ideas and see other peoples workmanship. I love looking at Minis, trawling through the trader stands, seeing my two little boys faces when they see a nice Mini. I love the heritage and Britishness about them, I love to drive them and I love the smell of them ('that' smell) I'd be a bit of 24 carat *male member* if I went dressed as Wonder Woman and then if I saw myself in Miniworld I'd F***ing DIE.

Well if you haven't got the legs for Wonder Woman you could always go as a giant banana.

I can't see how fancy dress detracts anything from the other aspects you mention 'n your kids faces must light up too when they point out the c**k in the banana suit to you?

^^very true!
Anorak, you've obviously never met TC :shifty:
Personally I wouldnt dress up to go to a show, but I sure as hell don't take offence to other people doing it. And I agree with Ethel - what makes shows enjoyable is the variety.

firstly, what exactly has "dressing up and having a laugh with their mates" got to do with the mini ???

The mini is just a car. Its not some sacred icon that must not be despoiled. They are not rare, they never will be. I don't really like people dressing up their cars in tat at shows (this is mainly a BMC fetish, so you can avoid it quite easily :) ), because I'd rather see the work and effort someone has put into their car. If people want to dress up, what does it matter? I just don't understand how you can let it wind you up so much.

Well said Vanman,

Minis are far from being automotive fossils, we're just as interested in personalizing them and making them even more fun to drive as they were back in the sixties. When the Mini scene is just stale old concourse restoration it will be dead and as boring as a classic MG or Jag.

1st statement: oh how wrong you are :shifty:

2nd statement: I'm well known for letting things wind me up. :D

It'd be a Giant Cucumber or maybe a *male chicken*. I said I'D be a bit of Knob if I went dressed up, by all means if some people like to go in fancy dress, that's entirely their choice. It doesn't wind me up enough to write to a magazine or to stay away from shows. I stated the reasons I enjoy Minis so much and obviously, dressing up isn't one of them. On the flip side, I don't understand spending thousands restoring a car, making it Look amazing then locking it away and polishing it and looking at it and bringing it to a show on a trailer instead of driving it and having fun in it, which is what it's made for. Some Mini owners are so far up their own Asspipe that they think that they're the only people who should own a Mini. I better stop because I'll just Rant and Rant........
