Mines on the drive, close to the road!

FINALLY got some time to work on it in the past week or so. Had to cut a strip off the rear floor mounts on the subframe, which broke my heart because it looked lovely all powder coated blue! But it had to be done to get the floor mounts to sit properly against the floor. But at least now the subframe is fully bolted in!

Not only that, but I also got the engine finished, and now thats bolted in too! Had a bit of trouble with the mounts Z Cars sent me, which were a few tenths oversized for the tubing they sit in, which meant I could bang them in, and then they'd get stuck. Had fun getting them out again after they jammed a bit, ground them down and now they fit perfect.

Also realised I had jammed the clutch slave cylinder pushrod against the clutch cover when putting the cover back on. Didn't want to have to take half the engine out to get the cover off, so thought I'd try and remove the clutch arm instead. Nearly went all so perfectly until I had one big whack at the clevis pin with a hammer and punch, and snapped the flange off the clutch cover! So half the engine came out anyway, and one spare clutch cover later it was all sorted. I hadn't un-plumbed the slave cylinder, so just bolted that back on, and the clutch works a treat.

Have also torqued the head down and just placed the dizzy in for safe keeping. Went home at lunch today so I could bolt on the alternator. I wanted to see quickly how much room I had for the radiator before ordering fixings from Minispares....

Not much room. I was uploading some more pictures, but obviously they didn't finish uploading before i came back to work!

I've thought about an MPi rad now, but not at the front. The problem isn't just the dizzy, its also the starter motor and alternator. It would be quite expensive to change all three items to smaller versions (£80 for starter motor, Denso alternator I already have, £150 ish for Megajolt...).

Here's one more pic of the room I've got...

The weekend of the Bingley show I met up with a guy who owns a Formula Renault team, and bought a couple of ex F3 aux radiators, hoping they would be perfect for sitting above the dizzy and below the starter:

I also then bought three Titanium bladed computer fans to use to draw air through them. As you can see there isn't much room.

So, couple of options. I have a Nippon Denso small alternator from a 1.5 Civic, I could use that, and possibly relocated in an effort to get enough room to keep the above radiator where it is. Or, I'm going to mock up a MPi rad in cardboard to see if it will fit anywhere, possibly above the clutch, or maybe down the timing cover side with an eleccy fan behind it...

how many heater matrix's do you recon would make the same area as a mini rad ?

if you used heater matrix's you could spread them around where ever theres a gap

just get rid of your boot, route vents throught the 3/4 pannels, cut holes in your boot lid and allow air to flow through
