It's only the wind and internal losses of sloshing the gears round in the sump and thrashing the valves up 'n down etc that stops your Mini going faster. Weight makes no difference, on the flat, save flattening your tyres a bit. in my experience a 998 should nudge 90, more is possible with a following wind. My tuned 998 would make it to a tonne with enough of a run up and could just manage a full lap of its centre speedo going downhill with a following wind - I put that down to the cam and double valve springs.

when i first got my mini i was 16 but it was taxed and tested until next month

my mate drove it (on his work insurance), he got but 82 on the speedo running no vacuum and before we set it up
it was slower running a vacuum

i fitted stage 1 exhaust, metro intake and, removed the air filter, but i do want one because pull off is rather poo
now i have passed my driving test i get to drive it i had about 85mph on the speedo

i decided to try top speed behind my mate in his slipstream my speedo was showing 90 but his tom tom one was showing 98

i have now fitting a 1275 big valved head (which is polished and ported and has been skimmed alot, and it has double valve springs) and i can sit at 80 in third all day long i have only taken it to 90 in fourth becuase i have never had the chance to go anyfaster
metro cam is going in soon

1330, hopefully 296 kent cam, the head and exhaust of the 1 litre and a loads of other bits waiting for bearing from minisport and minispares because they both got in wrong but it will be in run and run in by l2b

Down a hill (on private land) I got Bumble to about 95 - he's a standard 998. I say around 95 because the speedo only goes to 90 :) I did actually lay off the accelerator though, I didn't want to push the poor thing faster than he could manage without something blowing up :ermm:

Get a filter on Jack! not only will your engine last more than a week you will get more power as the air entering the carb will be much smoother.

...and thrashing your Mini isn't big or clever - even if we all give in to the temptation every once in a while :)

A Mini show I once attended ran a competition to guess at what time the mini engine would blow up. They set it running at max throttle and it sat there running flat out all day,, it never did blow up and they had to draw names from a hat to decide the winner.
Built to last :(

90+mph (140+kph) on my 998, managed to get 150kph on my new 1275 engine and still want more speed but I don't have the guts (yet) to go any faster...

I always wondered, if the standard 998 could whack 90+mph, why the technical data said it can only reach 82mph?
