It's hilarious that people actually WANT to race an old Mini... I mean come on, where's their ambition? It's pretty obvious a standard modern car such as a corsa or clio will beat a standard old mini.

Saying that, mine's a 1275 stage one, badge and styled as an old 850, it's quite entertaining at times :P especially in the right-hand lane on motorways :( until one of the tyres goes flat that is (like happened a few weeks ago :D )...

but tuning mini's isnt a secret kept by those whom own them. Alot of people have knowledge of how quick mini's can be. And if someone rev's next to you at the lights you going to accelerate as fast as possible anyway.

Why should a modern car such as a corsa beat a mini? it has to apply more saftey devices into the construction so modern cars are all heavy n horrible... and slow. Im sure a 1275 mini would beat a 1.3 anything. (both standard).

just a silly way to end up dying, racing a rubbish old vauxhall.
wouldn't try it on a roundabout especially.

roundabouts and corners are a minis best friend...hills are not! ive played with a few beamers, skylines and the likes round roundabouts...doesnt last long tho. ive also had some epic overtaking battles on emptyish dual carriageways with...errrrm...transit vans :D

I was driving my partners Golf TDI (Quite a rapid motor) from Milton Keynes towards Olney to get home one evening, and spotted a faded red mini with a white roof and running on fat 10"s (I think) with no arches, anyway, once through Olney there is a bit of a hill where you can put your foot down.
I wanted to keep up with this car but was totally unable to do so, it absolutely flew. So impressed!!!

Also, on the road out of Podington, towards Wellingborough etc, I've had a lot of fun in Git with my partner in her Golf, yes, the straights I get caned, but in the twisty bits, she doesn't stand a chance.

I totally agree with the other posts about being stupid and racing everybody else, I'm 39 and should know better... yeah, right!!
Is it just me, but whenever I get behind the wheel of a mini, I grow little red horns and a pointy tail.
It is a shame though, but I have to sell Git, I'll be putting up a seperate post a bit later, but I will be back behind the wheel really soon I hope....
... have fun... but be safe...

Whenever I'm on a clear bit of dual carriage way and a little Chav tries it I can't help myself, I'm picky with what cars I go up against, however I'll challenge anything on windy roads or islands. I've been driving 11 years and I'm halfway through qualifying as a driving instructor with a clean license, I've got 2 kids and I'm a very responsible driver. I DON'T act silly with my kids in the car OR on busy roads. I wish people would get off their high horses when it comes to stuff like this, it's FUN owning a Mini, they're made to be DRIVEN. We've all been boy racers at some point.

Driving a Mini quickly is half the fun of owning one. Who doesn't get a little grin on their face when they zip around a corner or a roudabout just that little bit quicker than the modern stuff?

I've done a few advanced driving courses in my job, and one of the guys that teaches them is a Mini racer, once he found out I owned one, he fettled the suspension on it and gave me a few extra lessons on an old airfield in my old cooper, wow!!

I've got a 300 bhp RS tuned 1994 Audi S4 estate, which is big, (2 tons),blindingly fast, but it doesn't stand a chance against a well set up Mini on the twisties.

afraid not, just depends how drive it,most 1.3's will push out more power than a mini 1.3/1275. Mini will beat most things on grip tho...and if theirs a hill involved just give up

You'll always get some Divvy trying to race you because of the Minis reputaion. The Italian Job has a lot to answer for. A mate of mine was chased around Wednesbury by an unmarked Focus in his Mini Van. He didn't break any speed limits really but the Focus couldn't catch him going between speed bumps, needless to say when he did stop the copper was swearing at him and being very aggressive. My mate had had some problems with some local lads so he was a bit paranoid anyway. In the end he got the roasting of his life, they searched his van and he got a producer. He was lucky.

As for as I can tell, unless a mini is seriously tuned, pretty much any modern car will beat it for acceleration, it's around the corners that they come into their own. Mini's aren't at all fast, they just feel it. It's like old sports cars like Astons, if you raced an DB7 against a diesel focus, the focus would win. Sounds stupid, but engineering has moved on! Agreed it's always fun to boot a mini, but racing others in chavved up piles of cr@p is just being as stupid as the chavs them selves, not to mention dangerous and probably illegal.

Disclaimer: It's not big 'n it's not clever

But, :D

I don't get the comments about hills. Yes, on a steady climb up a dual carriageway, you'd need a pretty trick Mini not to get killed by the combination of wind resistance and the gradient. However, on the lumpy, twisty, back roads the extra speed you can carry in to the climbs and when the gradients are steep enough to have you dropping through the gear box the Mini really comes in to its own. In short, the more the driver has to do the better the Mini is, which is why we love driving them I guess.

I overtook a ferrari on the nurburgring in my mini on one of the sharp corners then he past me a few corners later, after the lap when i parked up the bloke came up to me & shook my hand & basically said well done & asked if the vtec was hard to fit, when i told him it was only a 1380 his face was a picture. he asked why i was going so slowly a few corners later which i explained that id cooked my brakes & the pedel was hitting the floor. only go as fast as you can stop!
