Thanks mate. I would like to have all the welding done by the start of summer at the latest. But saying that, I won't sacrifice quality for anything. If I keep up the pace, then finishing the shell before summer should be non problemo.

wow you really do have some good body repair skills there!

i am really looking forward to seeing the end product. i think its fantastic the amount of detail you are paying to it. all those long hours will pay off in the end, and like you said, if you do a proper job, it should only need to be done once.

i am so glad our cooper has barely any rust!

Today I got the other side done. This side didn't need quite so much metal cutting out.

My sister took this picture of me on the unicycle... just having a quick break from the Mini!

I'm going to wake up early tomorrow to really try my best to get that rear panel on.

Yep I'll be keeping the dynamo. I'll probably rebuild and uprate it to give a bigger output. I also have a larger diameter pulley made of alloy which will be fitted to compensate for what will be my high-revving driving!

Another update with again, less progress than I was hoping to show. Somehow I managed to spend a few hours on Saturday, an almost complete day on Sunday and two hours this evening just prep'ing seams for the rear panel to be welded to. I must be absolutely mental!

I filled in all the slight dips that had been left from where I had drilled out the spot welds along the parcel shelf area.

Posted Image

The original rear panel was removed by cutting down the edge of the left and right hand seams (unlike the top edge where the spot welds had been drilled out). To get rid of the left over seam that I didn't want, I carefully ground it back making sure that I wasn't thinning any of the seam that I wanted to keep. Even though I was careful I did come across a few thin areas that needed to be welded (no pics) and one area that needed to be patched (shown below). I think that this must be the smallest patch that I have done on this project so far!

This bad bit of parcel shelf seam was cut out and replaced

Another little bit that needed to be patched (smaller than my fingernail).

So, there we have it. Some seams that I'm really proud of. It may seem like I'm going a bit far with them... but they weren't in great condition as they were fairly heavily pitted. If I hadn't have spent any time on them, then I would have just been spot welding to weak metal... which wouldn't have been much good for holding on my shiny new rear panel!

They've now been sprayed in Weld Through Zinc rich primer ready for me finally to get that rear panel on!
