Don't know if mpi's are like earlier cars where the head lamp harnesses joint to the main harness behind the grille by the bonnet latch. These are bullet connectors on earlier cars, unplug and pull the buckets complete with harnesses through the inner wing/front panel hole, then remove the harnesses from the headlamp buckets.

Thanks for your ideas however I think the MPI must be different. I have the buckets off with a small section of the loom still attached.
It must be a late MPI thing I guess as there is a multiplug connector just within the wing which you disconnect and it allows the bucket to come off but you still have a short piece of wire attached.

So I either have to disconnect the grey multiplug or the indicator bulb end.

I think I may just have to heat the solder up to release the bulb connector, UNLESS someone knows how to get the wire out of the multiplug end.
The black connector which goes on the headlight just has spade connectors which I can slide out with the help of a small flat blade screwdriver. Cant see that on the grey end.

Whatever you do drill the rivets out of the VIN plate and transfer. That also goes for the metal plate on the inside of the wing that you highlighted in one of the other pics. This has the paint and trim codes for the car on it.

With the detailed pics you are posting this is going to be a great build thread to inspire others ?

Keep up the good work Ben.

There's also the  VIN stamped in the rain channel on the scuttle. If you are replacing the panel then you could cut the section out of the old one and weld it into the new. Bit of a faff but could be done for completeness.

Great advice.  The scuttle is more rust than metal so I just hope it still exists.  I'll have a look for it tonight.

Don't quote me, but I thought that there was only one VIN plate on a mini. Yours (MPI) should be in the rain gutter of the scuttle panel (as per later cars), but looks to have been relocated to where its normally found on earlier cars. Mines a 1990 and is found on the left-hand side of the slam panel where yours currently is. Perhaps it has already had the scuttle replaced by a previous owner and was relocated then.

The plot thickens!  I am 99% sure the scuttle has never been touched.  I will take a look tonight on the scuttle for any signs of VIN.

My '91 Cooper has the plate on the inner wing and the stamping in the rain channel, both showing the VIN

The number stamped in the rain channel is about a third of the was across from the drivers side.

Like I said....don't quote me ? Never having owned a later car didn't realise that the plate was in both locations ??

So I have a w reg mpi. There is a rover black and white plate on drivers side inner wing, a riveted plate on the front panel near the bonnet catch and lastly a number stamped into the rain Gutter in the scuttle as panky said.

Did a few more bits last night.  Blew up the tyres too so it will be easier pushing it in and out of the garage when I come to remove the doors.
