10 years on I still use plug welds and replace whole panels if necessary, to avoid to much seam welding. You might as well replace whole panels as they are cheap and you can always use the scrap to practice or for patches.
Keep at it and it will get better.

Spent all day stipping the top arms off, to find that the donuts were ok. They were flatter than the new ones, but not by much.
So 4 hours spent strippping cleaning and greasing for suspension thats mildly higher. So i need to readjust the Hi Los when i get a chance arggg!!
But at least I get to see the new flat tomorow in leeds anyone want to go for a pint in the afternoon
And the rev meter / tachometer is off Ebay was £4.99 and then £12 postage

so yeah seems like the mini is staying spent alot of time over the last few weeks thinking and umming and arring and to be honest the 1275 pulls like a train, handles awesome and i can forget how cool the mini looks so yeh hes staying and ive started the interior revamp
so here some pics of todays attack
so thats the wing neatened up and im happy with how it looks for now
and for a few week i noticed the engine was alot noiser and came to find the manifold had split clean in tooo so i welded it up
also had a problem with the slave cylinder bolt decided to go south so had to repair that and did so with a new unc bolt and alot of washers
whilst i was doing this i welded in the patch on the rear seat bin and then painted the interior black to match the carpets
and i have ordered new cone washers and hub nuts to remove the lil bit of play in the wheels and part of my dash board plans arrived
in short making a 18mm thick mdf dash with my bro the carpenter / builder, my brother thats a painter will be doing a custom paint job for me and ill make sure it looks good fitted
so yeh shall be fun few weeks new engine mounts, mot, tax and interior spice up
Do you actually think itll pass an MOT?
if i had welding that bad on Boris id be to ashamed to post a picture

Who did it? Id report them and get their bussiness shut down right away!!!
Contact trading Standards they may be able to get you a refund?
Thats cars a deathtrap if it was in an Accident i wouldnt like to think of the concequences

i think it would be best to reshell it and get all the mechanical side checked out as i wouldnt think its safe to drive

better to get the safety side of things sorted before you do any cosmetics, good luck with the project

Ah come on SFM, she was only looking out for you and trying to be helpful, I agree it doesnt need a reshell. I understand welding is hard to get the hang of but really you should practice till your welds are penetrating properly and not just sitting on the top other wise you'll get moisture in the gaps and the seam will rust out.
Thanks Greasemonkey

i honestly thought somebody had ripped him off doing a really bad bodge job

Though i do remember though a post a while back where he was saying it was ok to bodge brake calipers to get you home

I openly admit i didnt at the time know how to do brakes so took it to a specialist rarther than even trying myself theres a danger that if you posts bodges youve done yourself others may follow suit with disasterous consequences

Anyhooz practice does make perfect i guess id practise on something else first though rather than something im driving myself and if i found i couldnt do something id get somebody else who knew what they were doing to do the job instead for safety sakes .
No offence intended but if i wasnt sure how to do something id consult somebody who did and id only give advice on stuff i know about

As far as Reshelling goes maybe it doesnt need reshelling but if he cant do the required welding himself or get somebody to do it for him surely its an option?
If i have caused offence im sorry it wasnt intended though i take spamming others threads is against TMF rules ?
So i hope i dont get spammed simply for trying to helpful?
Dont really want to get involved in an argument so ill say no more

Jodie, I think thats a little OTT, nothing the fella has done has turned his car into a 'deathtrap'. Do you know whats needed for an MOT? Based on those pictures you'd reshell? I'd spend £80 on panels or possibly repair whats there. Give the bloke a break.
Don't forget his near death experiance when his brake caliper fell of because it hadn't been done up properly!!

But whilst it was apart i
* freed all the grease nipples
cleaned the top arms and pins
regreased all the supension
freed the rusted N/S Hi Lo
Checked the wheel bearing
checked the caliper bolts (were tighter than a nuns ****)
repainted a few spots
fitted a few blanking grommits
replaced the roll pin on the gear rod
rejigged the back box
fitted poly gearbox steady bushes
cleaned and painted the donuts (the metal part not the rubber thanks burny)
check and regreased the knuckles
Basically overhalled a fair few bits and the cars driving great
althought i overtopped the oil with some Four season 20w50 i found in the garage hahahaha (old skool) Mainly as i did the topping up when the car was on axel stands DOH
You live you learn you die you burn/ Thats my best moto
I agree i have made mistakes in the past namely the day I drove on with a wheel that kept locking
I have been likened to a monkey before hence the nickname Chunky Monkey by my Neice aged 5 (now 8)
I am learning been working around cars for 3 years and I have in that time done alot of repairs and modifiying of cars (alot more than most)
But when people tell me i cant do something. It insent me to go and do it, Childish i Know but still Im not perfect. Far from it Jack of all Trades master of none (Yet).
I thank everyone that gives me constructive criticism but the likes of you should never touch tools again doesnt help anyone when I work with cars lol
Although i did rush when i fitted the calipers, so this is to blame for the afformentioned Caliper incident!!
Sorry for being an arse and jumping down your throat in hindsight i may have been a tool

fitted a lower dash rail, awaiting the new gear knob, getting a new heater tomorow hopefully. Then i need to get a new circle of glass for the dials, and then i can fit it all and enjoy the revamped interior

Tax to does runs out end of this month ie 31st july 09. but the mot is my birthday 05/08/09, so want to keep that date

Also going to readjust the drivers side still a tad too low.
