Thanks, its looking ok so far, lot of work left though. Got to wait for the resin to dry for a bit longer I think, but I wont have a chance to get on with the next step till tomorrow now anyway.
Heres a quick mobile pic of it after the first coat of resin:

Thanks man, I did notice it has bowed slightly, but I'm sure when I bolt it down it'll be fine!

Progress has been slow, this weather is disgusting and I really cant be bothered when its horrible outside :teehee:

But nevertheless I cracked on with my first ever encounter with body filler! Never used anything like it before so I didnt have a clue, just spread it on as even as I could! :w00t:
Ran out though, the little tub I got in halfords was pittiful! I had to keep mixing it as I went too, since the first batch I made wasnt enough, and neither was the second, so the third time I just stuck it all in the mix and still didnt have enough to cover it. :gimme:
Anyway, I've started sanding it down now, going to sand it back quite far and have another go, this time I'll buy enough to cover the damn thing lol

just a question, i haven't done any fibre-glass moulding (yet). Wasn't the fibre-glass surface good enough to sand flat without the extra filler? i'm watching this thread & learning as you go!

cheers, keep up the good work!

This isnt going to be a mould mate, just going in the car as it is. I was thinking of making a mould so I could make some more and sell them on, but with uni coming up in a few weeks, I wont have the time :(
And as for the fibreglass part, I didnt use any :) Just the resin, of which I used about 4 coats and found it was stiff enough without fibreglassing it. I was afraid it would add too much thickness, and space on the back shelf there was at a premium, so after all the hard work, for it not to fit in would be a disaster!
I also did the first coat of body filler as a "milkshake" mixture, where you add a bit of resin to the filler. Its stiff as anything now, there is a tiny flex in it, but thats really not avoidable.
So to answer your question, I think the best way to get a painted finish is to use a filler, dont think it would look right if you painted just the fibreglass. Plenty of sanding to go though :(

On another note, this mini now has a fully certified driver, since just a few minutes ago,

AMY PASSED HER TEST!! ;) :)

Oh tell me about it, had the shed door open with the fans on blowing it al out! The sanders useless for this job though, its more for flat surfaces. Gonna see if i can borrow the orbital from the local garage.

Had major problems last night though, petol tank sprung a leak from the sender plate :)
Waiting on a new seal and ring, but have managed to stop petrol pouring out everywhere! Bad news is its stripped the paint in the boot badly, so its gonna need a re-spray

So hasnt been any progress on the shelf i'm afraid!

Had the petrol leak sorted out monday, new sender seal and ring did the job, also went at the mounting tabs on the tank with a hammer just to be sure it was as tight as possible.
Also had the car checked over by Target Mini in Swansea who did a great job with the fuel mixture and timing, now he runs like a dream!

Took the shelf down to my local garage and had a go with their orbital, didnt get any pics though. I decided to leave it down there since the body repairs guy said he would do the filling again for me if I got him more filler. So once its come back done I'll get some pics and start painting it! >_<

Yeah Mike the painter showed me how to use the orbital, and then as a bonus offered to skim filler the whole lot for me if I just bought him the filler :)

So after a few days of no progress, I'm pretty close to finishing. Hopefully start painting tomorrow. Check it out:
