I just saw the thread that mab01uk posted on the MINI2 forum, and i had to laugh at their posts, i dont think they realise their passion would be around if it wasnt for the Mini! which greatly saddens me, as i had a bit of a think the other night when i was bored, and thought, if BINI drivers make the effort to flash or wave, it obviously shows they want to be part of the Mini scene, me and my mate both dislike the BINIs, but we were in his moke after himley last year, and a BINI one flashed at us, and we both looked at each other as if to say what to do, and we both agreed that, if a BINI driver knows what a moke is, he must have a reasonable interest in classic minis too! but now reading what some of them have put, im going back to blanking them!

Don't blank all of us MINI owners Mistro!!
As has been said by roga most of the true MINI enthusiasts are now over on TotalMini.com so take a look over there for a more balanced view of the MINI scene and also the scrappage topic! (There are a couple of people on MINI2 I still keep in touch with for now).
I think I have a reasonable interest in classic Minis having owned them continuously since the late 1970's..........so I would always wave/flash you in my classic but the reactions from classics when driving my MINI are very varied so do I tend not to bother trying. In its heyday classic Minis did not wave or flash each other due to the sheer numbers on the road which is exactly why MINIs don't do this much today. However modded MINI's do tend to flash/wave each other more as they are easy to pick out and it more likely indicates a fellow enthusiast, although plenty of course do have standard spec cars as in the Classic Mini scene.

il have a look over on totalmini then! i do think that BMW are coming round to the idea of the heritage of the mini, by sponsoring the IMM and putting on mini united, but i think they have been let down majorly by one or two dealers, who have been insensitive and in my books have put BMW back at the bottom of the ladder! and have all that work to do again!

If people flash me from now on, i will flash back now!

on the other hand! nearly 600 people are members of the group now!

i agree with Mistro's last comment, i got an invite to join your group but i didnt - as the dealer i work for has done exactly the same thing, however we did it as a joke using my own mini (now its changed to a G reg metro). dont worry i havent scrapped it but there has been a load of much nicer cars that some customers have brought in for scrap - an almost rust free triumph vitesse was one of them, the last i saw f it was it being loaded by a grabber onto a lorry.

A vitesse!?

This is getting silly... surely there's something we can do.

It couldn't be simpler:
- Mk1 Transit (preferably in some threatening colour, black or dark green perhaps - burgandy will work too)
- Parka Jacket (olive green, complete with faux fur hood - or real fur, but that might upset a few people)
- Sawn off shotgun (not that i'd condone such a thing Muahahahaha! *ahem* )

judging by how well the scrappage scheme has gone so far, the industry reckons that it could be finished by the end of the year, as the government has only set aside a limited amount of money for it. (not that they lose anything, they get 15% of each new car sale back because of VAT!). And no one has scrapped a mini in any of the dealers round here, mostly old metros, fiestas etc.

i could supply 2 of those things but someone will need to supply a hacksaw to cut my shotguns down (joking, theyre worth more than most mpi minis)

the vitesse was stupid, and hopefully the customer who did it regrets it, however the salesman did try and sell the car on ebay before putting it through the scrappage scheme but got nowhere with it, sad but its the customers choice. although with the 6 metros that are there, i have been pillaging bits but i cant take brakes or engines as they have to be driveable

This is what I dont understand, surely the dealer would be better taking the Vitesse for the 2k of his own money and passing it on to whoever they use to sell their non Bini part exs to get the money back and or make a profit. This scheme absolutley stinks. Just out of intrest redhotmini have your OTRs gone up much in the last 6 months or so?

I buy fleet cars direct from the manufacturer and my overall impression is that the retail price and the otr prices of new cars was creeping up for a few months before the scrappage scheme became public. Conspiracy theroy it might be but it wouldnt suprise me if we end up paying for the 2k scrappage money at both ends ie the governments grand and the manufacturers.

Hang on, I thought the vehicles had to be scrapped, no matter what? Does this mean they can actually be spared from the scrapper? My understanding was that once traded in, it was doomed to an early death.
Good work to the guy for having a try, my hat off to you and him!

well the cost prices for toyotas went up as demand dropped to help cover any losses, but back then there was no talk of scrappage schemes. we tried everything we could to save the vitesse, none of our traders wanted it as they thought it was too risky and hard to shift as the used car market is quite frankly *melon* at the moment. the scheme was crap to start with, as we were getting tons of interest, but no one had a clue how it worked, whether our centre was actually participating and how we claimed for the price cut!

they have to be scrapped, but the salesman tried to sell it on for the customer before the car was signed over for scrap, but it never sold. shame really. if there is somethign that is clearly something special then we'll try our best to save it but its not the best of times for sales as people tend to be hanging on to their money

I guess the dealer does the deal with the customer, takes the V5 and MoT cert, then it's up to them to submit the claim - or not.

today we had a bmw 635csi (an old one, dont know what they are worth) go off for scrap. some of the cars just seem to be real nice for their age. so far no minis but if one does come in then i will try my best, maybe even buy it myself if i like it. gone are the days i could buy a trade in mini for a few hundred quid, spend a few more on tidying it up and sell it on or keep it depending on how my account balance looked! best bargain was an early spi which i got for £400, needed a sill and that was it.

Reported by the original photographer of the Mini spotted at a Dealer in Scotland:-

"The classic Mini has now been replaced at Park's MINI garage by an unfortunate Fiat Punto. Park's is a very large, successful group and operates, in the same town and around the county, dealerships for many different makes. Their BMW franchise's scrappage "victim" is a late 80's/early 90's 3-series (which looks very tidy) and at the Skoda dealership it's a VW Golf which, again, looks pretty much OK at a quick glance. There is no sign of a scrappage offer at the local Bentley showroom."
