Just read the whole thread from start to finish, fair play!
I would still be running away from that shell if it was mine.
Keep up the good work and keep the updates coming! Can't wait to see the finished product!
Whatever happens you will have learned more over this project than i will probably ever learn!

Brad pal, you are doing a A1 job there, I love a rustbucket too now and then, when you to the end we all pat you on the back, shame to think that someone would have scrapped that mini, ...hat off to you to put life back in it. But at the same time it is good to listen and learn from others on here, they been there themselves b4......and might have stumbled and did not get any advise/comments but had to learn it the hard way, or symply started a new project. Keep it going, you will get there.

Cheers mate , progress is really slow now as I work on a Saturday which was usually when I worked on it mostly , but I have money now so should be able to get panels and that quicker. Atleast theres Sundays

Just came across this thread and it would seem to me that it is split in three, some who encourage you, others that seem concearned but there also seems to be a minority that seem to be encouraging you for the wrong reasons.

A couple points I've picked up on that you have asked the posters to expand on.

Your welding: I firmly believe that a Mig should be used with an inert gas and not with a fluxed wire (metal inert gas) the name says it all really, your welding has not been shielded and has been attacked by the air and contaminated by the corrosion (oxidised). It will be very weak and full of tiny air bubbles. Advice on the welding is to cut back to sound steel, and re-invest in a true Mig welding set using gasses such as Argon Shield or CO2 (Pub bottle).

Your car: most on here might not like to admit it but alot have done it, spent a fortune on panels, fit said panels then eventually found ourselves months, years down the road scrapping the shell and opting for something different (part of the learning curve I'm afraid). Now what certain members have tried to do is persuade you to cut your losses early doors and purchase a different bodyshell (there have been two that finsihed this week that would have fit the bill for not much more than your floors and A'panels and other guff your will require soon) http://cgi.ebay.co.u...E:B:WNA:GB:1123 or http://cgi.ebay.co.u...E:B:WNA:GB:1123 and if this http://cgi.ebay.co.u...973092253289481 is the same Mayfair shell (was a 93 not 80's) it originated up in tyneside and is pretty solid as I was going to purchase it last year, I'm not saying that they are perfect but a quick check over would more or less show that the hard work has been done or if you should just walk away.

I find it outstanding that a young lad like yourself has the will power to keep plodding on but I really fear the worst for you with this bodyshell, and know only too well that if you had yourself a better base then you certainly have the determination to have one of the best little cars around, you certainly can put it together at a cost but does it not worry you that if you do sell it on (as stated in another post in the thread) that some unsuspecting buyer might well have a collision in it, the people that have advised against this rebuild are pretty well informed and offer their advice soley to save your finances in the long term.

Many people say that you will be an expert at welding when finished, I disagree!! You will learn more by getting two bits of steel and laying a weld across them until your confident with the technique, not only is it less frustrating but the scrap steel wont hit your pocket like heritage panels do.

I'd like to convert my welder to gas but I'm not sure how. Most of the time , if I feel that the welds arent good enough , I will keep doing them again until I am happy. My welding has progressed alot since the start of the project. Usually after welding , we would test the weld to see how strong it is , and again if not strong enough would be redone.
If you have any advice of converting my welder to gas , please let me know in this thread.
Thanks , Callum.

Callum the easiest option would be to purchase a good second hand MIG as the no gas migs (clarke etc) would require a new torch, liner and modification to machine itself, a good second hand (hobby mig) say a clarke or sip 120e can be sourced quite cheap and will have more than enough amps to do a job.

I restored my first mini at the age of 14, it was a 68 van and was a complete basket case, I learnt the hard way and ended up ploughing over £500 in panels into it, the van did see the road but I was never happy with it and ended up re-shelling it. All is never lost though as panels can be removed and used on another project should things go tits up.

Fingers crossed for you bud, but please step back and consider your options and then plough more cash into it if need be.
