I did a compression text this morning and got 190 190 200 210 psi. High enough, and somewhat even. Assuming the 10% rule works from the average, they are within what they should be. The spark plugs seemed to have the normal biscuity-white colour when I pulled them. The lambda has been replaced, and that was the only diagnostic fault last time.

You're right, she doesn't deserve new shinies, but I had to do something that felt positive with the car as I was about ready to give up!

It's so frustrating! I really thought it was the idler bearing and rebuilding the 'box would leave everything running well once more.

The search goes on!
Edit: my rattle goes away with the clutch down, it seems the clutch is pulling whatever is lose tight again.

Well it's a small world! I have exactly the same thing with Sir D - I've diagnosed (with assistance) down to 2 parts - Clutch release bearing, or the idler gear. Sir D's engine is being hoisted out March/April to address this and the speedo drive. If you dont get yours done before then, feel free to take note and visa versa. :)
To clarify - when cold it's barely noticable (because i know to look out for it, I can hear it), once warmed up after a 25-30 miles drive it's far more apparent and easily distinguishable for general engine bay rattle. Clutch down and it's gone.

Apparently it could also be chatter from the drop gears due to an issue with the crank. I hope it's not that!
I've driven to work unable to select second gear today, not so great! It's a bad month for mini'ing here!
