It's more a rattle. Most noticeable at idle, push the clutch down and it goes away. It also doesn't seem to be running right, its a bit lumpy as if its missing slightly. I've no idea if these things are related or not, but first step it's hopefully off to have the diagnostic check some time soon. The clunk when pulling away is related to the poor running I think. Rev it to 1400 and it pulls away fine. But I like my clutch in one piece :P

I did a compression text this morning and got 190 190 200 210 psi. High enough, and somewhat even. Assuming the 10% rule works from the average, they are within what they should be. The spark plugs seemed to have the normal biscuity-white colour when I pulled them. The lambda has been replaced, and that was the only diagnostic fault last time.

Nice looking shinies, there, Mr James. I'm not sure she deserves them at the moment, though!

How did she run back from Bingles?

Not too bad on the whole of the bingles run, once she's rolling she's not too bad Ju. Fuel return seemed a bit better with the new lambda too. It's just idling and pulling away when she's a bit poo.

You're right, she doesn't deserve new shinies, but I had to do something that felt positive with the car as I was about ready to give up!

Is it when she's cold, or does she still make a fuss when she's warmed up?

It seems more apparent when warm, although that could just be I let her get away with more when cold. After a few miles today, well warmed up, we parked her in the carpark and had a listen. It's like a rhythmic stutter at idle, and a constant rattle.

Arghhhhhhhhhh

...and it's DEFFO coming from the engine rather than a wobbly ancilliary or bit of trim?

I'm chasing a similar rattle at the moment...

Yep, I'm quite sure! I've poked absolutely everything, plus the engine has been out to replace the gearbox, so I imagine John would have disturbed and reseated anything else.

It's so frustrating! I really thought it was the idler bearing and rebuilding the 'box would leave everything running well once more.

Not the water pump bearing by any chance? Mine's just started ratting once it's warmed up.

Engaging the clutch wouldn't affect the water pump would it? It was changed about 2 years ago for a proper MGRover item so I hope that's still good!

And no, it not all in my head, other people have heard the rattle too :P It's quite hard to hear from outside the car with the bonnet down, but it's very apparent in the cabin or with the bonnet open.

Mine only rattles on idle, so I only really hear it when I put the clutch down.

They don't last all that long to be honest.

Well, it's something else to look in to! It's booked in on Friday at Track, Road & Race, so that will hopefully highlight or rule out a sensor issue.

The search goes on!

Edit: my rattle goes away with the clutch down, it seems the clutch is pulling whatever is lose tight again.

Well it's a small world! I have exactly the same thing with Sir D - I've diagnosed (with assistance) down to 2 parts - Clutch release bearing, or the idler gear. Sir D's engine is being hoisted out March/April to address this and the speedo drive. If you dont get yours done before then, feel free to take note and visa versa. :)

To clarify - when cold it's barely noticable (because i know to look out for it, I can hear it), once warmed up after a 25-30 miles drive it's far more apparent and easily distinguishable for general engine bay rattle. Clutch down and it's gone.

I don't really know what the parts are called in the gearbox, but I had the idler bearing replaced as part of the gearbox overhaul. That can rattle when worn, but I don't know if thats the same part as the idler gear or not. I assume the clutch release bearing would have been renewed at the same time, but if it wasn't, I hope it's that, a nice simple fix!

Apparently it could also be chatter from the drop gears due to an issue with the crank. I hope it's not that!

I've driven to work unable to select second gear today, not so great! It's a bad month for mini'ing here!
