PaxAndMaddy you're a bad influence on me!

I did actually discuss Gus with the parents (he'd live in their garage). I'd love a more unique Mini, but I really can't afford to have such an expensive car sat in the garage :( I don't think I'd want to use such a car as my daily work run around!

It's my favourite girls name :D Just sadly I'm yet to meet a Florence!

And having moved to her from a Mini 1000, the smooth and refined drive suited the name flow. Or Flo :D

Shame she isn't so smooth now :(

Oh, I have been pointed to this thread with the same rattle, I start it from cold, and not a noise. After a few miles driving and sat on idle, I put the clutch down and the noise goes. My grandad who used to race minis in the 70s said it was just general gearbox wear and will chatter at lower revs.

This is weird :/

Bang on what mine is doing. But Guessworks has rebuilt the gearbox, so it does point toward something else. Crank thrust bearings are another term I've heard with regard the rattle.

Oh and I'm going to try bleeding the clutch later to see if that solves my problem. The clutch hydraulics weren't touched when the engine was removed, so that is hopefully the issue with regard to the gears :)

Mini Danny on here had the same issue, he replaced the clutch bearing and it solved it! Even though I was led to believe it would make it worse when the clutch was pressed.

I was going to do this, mine drags in reverse which means it could be that? they crunch when cold too.

Let us know how you get on, hopefully will solve it. Mine hasn't been bled for years and sat in the garage for 10 of them!

I'll confirm with John if the release bearing was inspected or replaced. It's a cheap fix, as is the crank, its the issue of pulling the engine again :(

I've heard that a crunch into reverse is clutch related rather than gearbox. I'd certainly bleed/replace the old fluid, and check there are no weeps.

It is ok when the revs are low, just when it is anything higher than a 1000.

Really you want to be at idle for putting the car in reverse. My 1000 crunched reverse when the choke was out but not when warm. A bleed of the clutch hydraulics solved that.

The gears crunch when cold too, got told it was the clutch expanding with heat, or something to do with that anyway haha.

Well my attempts to fix it have made it worse  I tried using the easy-bleed kit, that spewed clutch fluid all down my bulkhead, so i had to flush that off. Trying to do it with two people just resulted in air coming through with every pump. So I gave up. Now the first 1/4 of the clutch travel feels like nothing, and the biting point is really near to the floor.

I wish I could just send the car away somewhere and the problems be fixed :( It's a headache trying to sort all this out.

You're gonna need to bleed it again pal, that'll only make life harder with air in the system. The 1-man kits aren't too much of a pain though - better to remove any and all obstacles when you do it (air filter, relay pack and of course the ECU).

This didn't resolve the rattle for me, but it did clear some air in the system and improved the clutch action.

I'm hoping the garage can do it on Friday! My easy bleed kit won't properly seal on to the clutch master, so won't work properly. The clutch still works, the pedal travel just feels a bit wrong, so I'll still be able to get it there at least! That will then hopefully allow me to make full use of this new gearbox, and then concentrate on tracking the unrelated rattle down.

I'll have another look tomorrow if I have time between clients. I was getting frustrated with it today so thought it best to call it a day. I had put it back together so didn't fancy taking it apart again :(
