Sean is there any definitive way of testing the release bearing is at fault? I don't want the hassle of changing it in situ if I then have to pull the engine out because it didn't solve the rattle!

I hate this rattle with all my heart. It's so frustrating and every solution seems to mean taking at least half my engine bay apart again!

Reading other threads, people say that because when you put your foot on the clutch the idler gear stops, well it dosen't just stop, it just removes load.

So they are saying it is more likely to be the thrust bearing.

If you get stuck bleeding the clutch you can back bleed it with a syringe and some clear tube pushing the fluid back though the system from the bleed nipple

Couldn't agree more, never hated a noise so much, now mine isn't loud that something needs doing, just a chatter and when it sits at about 500 revs.

Does putting your foot on the clutch change the rattle?

As soon as the pedal feels like the clutch is definitely moving, the rattle goes away.

Engine revs remain stable, the engine sounds just the same with that slight misfire type thing.

It's all just the same, only the rattle goes away. Sounds nice and quiet when it's not rattling!

Sounds like a chatter. And as mine sits at 500 revs it will change pitch, like loud loud quiet loud quiet loud loud.

Sort of thing :/

Heres a thought....

What if the clutch stop was over adjusted?

Not the big throw out nuts but the small nut and bolt that acts as a rest for the arm?

If that was wound out too far then the thrust bearing could be coming into contact with the clutch, not enough to operate it, but enough to turn slightly?

That could rattle?

Where abouts is the little bolt? I seem to remember it on my old Mini but I can't recall seeing i on this one. Not that you can see much down the clutch end...

Well, it is set too 800, but I blip the throttle it will drop down to 500/600 for a bit and then it is at is worst, even at 800 I can hear it chattering away.

Good shout above!
