It should be by the clutch arm, but having said that the verto clutch may not have one. Its a bit modern for me.

The verto does have an adjustable stop, You shouldn't have to adjust it unless it's disassembled, but that doesn't mean someone hasn't.

My old car was pre-verto. I'm not sure verto has one. Screeny from the Rover book, it's not mentioned in the clutch adjustment section.

I am still wondering about the pulley.

Since the noise started when mine was changed, the smaller one can't be gripped well.

When cold it will be under more load, and when warmed up it will slacken off a bit making it rattle?

Just a thought...

So, some progress! This morning I went to see Dave at Track, Road & Race. He knows his stuff when it comes to injection Minis. All of this means more work and more money, but I have some direction to the issues now!
  • All my sensor type things are alive and working :D
  • My rattle is coming from the drop gears >_<
  • My clutch hydraulic system keeps letting air in as parts need replacing >_<
  • My crappy idle is due to excessive crankcase pressure >_<

At idle, the car is running on the breather gases rather than fresh air. Put your hand over the intake or throttle body and it doesn't stall! Having done a leak down test, the rings seem to be letting the engine breath a bit heavily.

Engine out again then!

I need to weigh up my options before booking her in. Labour and parts for engine out, rebuilt, and back in isn't going to be cheap :(

Oh bugger :( I guess mine is in the same situation then.

I can't afford to get mine sorted out.

Rubbish, eh? It was really quite likely that any engine rattle was going to require significant work to sort out. Doesn't make it any easier to swallow, especially when I'd just paid for the gearbox!

Another project for work starts tomorrow, so I can't be without a car. I'll also need to add a hire car for however many days the Mini is off the road now I don't have a company car. Bumps up the cost further.

Oh well :( I do love my Mini. I think. Maybe. Sort of.

I seriously considerd selling mine, it might go on for years with the problem! is your rattle loud? can you hear it from the outside? I can't hear mine that loudly unless I am inside the car and it is warmed up which I don't get either.

Mine is quite quiet. I can hear it inside the cabin sat at traffic lights, and we could hear it today in the garage with the bonnet open from a couple of feet away. Once Dave knew what to listen for he could hear it all the time. Apparently it's not too bad, they can make a hell of a lot more noise than what mine is. As per yours, mine only does it when warm.

What engine do you have? Could you pick up another cheaply to tide you over?

998 A+, 1983!

Mine has had loads of work done on the engine. Can't even afford that!

Yeah apparently they make a whiring sound in first gear when they are bad. Mine is perfect other than the crunching but that is a mal adjusted clutch.

I wonder if it is just because the oil gets thinner and rattles more.

Have you thought of rebuilding the engine yourself? It's not as hard as you might think.
