I want this Merc
190E, insurance for me would only be £1373 for a 1.8l auto.

If it's only a winter car, does it matter what it is? You must have a rough idea what type of car you want / need so just find the best condition motor in budget. As a rough rule tho cheap German motors will feel better put together than even expensive French ones :thumbsup:

Personally I drive this;

Which contrary to it's basic looks is 2.5 Si which makes it great fun for toying with boy racers who assume it's a 1.6 Verona! And as it has a towbar it's very handy for hitching up the trailer and dragging the Mini to trackdays :lol:

Looking at this. I only drive 4 days a week and not far..... 25 miles max (that's there and back!) so I'm thinking this might be ok until I find that dream Fantasia green Lupo Diesel 1.7!!!!

£990 for a Fiat Seicento? You must be mad, there's better cars for the money. I know it's just for a run about, but what about a 1.25 Zetec Fiesta? 1.0l Micra etc?

Got it for 945. It's very low mileage and lovely condition and it is in a convenient place to be put up to me on the ferry! Can always re -sell if I don't get on with it! I had a cheap micra.... it rusted, and caused me a lot of problems. This has been used so little it has never had the tyres changed yet! And I've still got Tiny for looking cool!

does it have to be small? - i've got a 98 primera SRI which is fast, economical, brilliant handling, reliable and bloody cheap, you could even get a good GT for that sort of money - 150bhp from a car that looks like a taxi, no kudos but endless fun blowing all those stupid corsa's with big exhausts away, mind you anything could blow them away , even my wifes micra .......

The Fiat is a good little car, very low mileage, very clean, no rust, good spec. It's also great fun to drive, I took it for a test drive last night :D very mini like! List price is £1200 for that model, got it for £945, so even if she doesn't like it, she can make at least £200 straight away. She doesn't need a fast car, she needs something economical, cheap to tax, insure and maintain, a reliable A to B car.

It hasn't got that stupiud clutchless manual gear box has it???

My daily drive is a 52 plate Mondeo 2litre TDCI Ghia X auto!

However, I live in Kent and all my family live up North, and it's such a good motorway cruiser, and at 50mpg it's good on fuel too.

I also own a Yamaha RD125LC

Series 1 106 Rallye would be a scream IMO.

Golf Mk2 GTi's are sound, easy to fix, great to drive and tough

205 XS is brilliant too and you can get a gudden for half your budget..

Didn't realise it would book so high at £1200, £945 seems like a bargain then. :-

Indeed, it looks like a lovely wee car, but I am not finding it cheap to insure!! Adrian Flux quoted me £640!!!!!!!!!!! They said it was "not exactly sought after" so they were finding it hard to get people to insure it. Kwik fit are cheapest at £274 comp. I looked around and I reckon for the condition it's in that is a fair price. That diesel Lupo is my dream car though, I saw a lupo today and I started squealing in the street. Cute and solid, £30 tax, 65mpg...... keep yer eyed peeled! Fiat will be lovely 'til my lupo dream comes true! (p.s not really calling it Bluebell, I was joking)

Get a K11 Micra, the replacement for the Mini even down to the 998 and 1275 engines, good fun with some lower and stiffer springs and some decent rubber, and very reliable.
