Thanks for the response guys. Shes currently running at TDC, with loads of advance on. No pinking or knocking. Seems to pull fine, pretty reasonable for an 850, its not fast but its better than it has been!

Small update, I bought a pair of genuine rover mirrors from minispares for £10. 'A lucky dip sale' mismatch of colours.

I rubbed them down with abrasive pads (like a brillo pad) to remove the gloss to make them matt. I then sprayeda plastic repair clear coating over the mirros and prepped them for 2 layers of gloss black. They look ace. I haven't managed to fit them yet as its raining and they're a ******* to fit!

They look fab Lund :P

We are going to do the same For Boris one of his mirrors is scratched and both a bit grubby :D
So i think we are going to get a lucky dip with a number plate lamp too :D

Couldnt decide whether to do them satin or gloss but after seeing yours i think we will go for gloss :P

If your willing to put the work in yourself those lucky dip mirrors have to be the biggest bargain ever :dontgetit:

I was originally From Birkenhead hasvnt been up for a while but that newspaper your spraying on reminds me of home :dontgetit:

Im guessing its your local version of the Wirral News?

Keep up the good work your car looks fabb :P

Hi all, not much good news to tell unfortunately!

I've been dismissing and shying away from the fact that the little 850 is nearing the end of its life; losing compression, burning oil, using masses of petrol, and using water. On inspection of removing the head the cylinder bores are worn towards the top of the cylinder and I'm getting a slight piston slap. She had covered 89,000 + miles. I suspect cylinder three to be the worst affected. As the spark plug is always black in colour whereas the other plugs remain a 'normal' colour ; sugesting perished oil seal?

Realistically, I can't afford to have the engine bored out, with over-size pistons and reground crank. Were talking hundreds of £££s?

That leaves me with several options;

* Renew insurance again this year in december and run it as it is in its unefficient state - constantly losing money with no driveability
* Have the engine bored out, over-size pistons and regrind crank?
* Locate a new A-series engine to drop in? A larger engine, in its standard state, for instant power gains. However, I dont know where that leaves me regarding insurance prices!?

:D

Difficult timessss....

Tom

I think a mini specialist insurer would damage ya too much for putting a 998 in. Or even a 1275.

is the decal on the side an original or have you designed it yourself, i reckon somthing similar might go well on my mini :shifty:

but yeah really love the mini, its one ive always liked, proper retro (Y)

A mini specialist would damage you much less for an engine swap compared to a mainstream insurance company. worth getting quotes , Lund.

Why not source another 850 engine, mate? Or have you had enough of it? Perhaps a small upgrade to a 998 would be a viable option?
