How/why is it flush with the block?

It hasn't seated correctly. It should be recessed by about 3mm and it isn't.

Do you have the cam plate bolted to the other side of the engine to stop the cam moving about?

The locating plate is on.

Ah I see - it may not be damaged then, it may have engaged into the cam and be spinning, just if it is not compressed against it's gasket it won't be doing much pumping etc.
Once the end is lined up and located into the cam it should drop into the recess quite easily. Also make sure you don't over tighten the bolts, they only need somthing like 8-12lb/ft (from memory).

Update;

I had the engine out again, inspected the oil pump, which was literally dry and undamaged. It seems like the cam took the forefront of the damage. Fortunately only minor therefore, a new oil pump (probably wasn't all that necessary), new gaskets and shes built back up. Whilst the engine was out I took the opportunity to give it another lick of paint as it was thin in places and also chipped.

Engine is back in again now, looking superb and I finally have oil pressure!

Currently the battery is too weak to turn the engine over as it is tight with the plugs in etc. I've got the mini battery on charge tonight and will piggy back the Land Rover battery with some jump leads tomorrow, hopefully both batterys combined will have enough juice to start her up for the first time!

Failing that I'll have to bleed the brakes and give it a tow. Used the easy bleed on the clutch, which has worked perfectly.

So had the oil pump not seated into the cam slot? Sounds strange.

Err that is a 1293 he's built up!!

Yeah seems a little odd, how come the cam is sitting a little far in? Or was it that the oil pump drive didn't sit in the slot properly?

The pump drive wasnt sitting on the cam properly. It hadn't engaged.

Success...Kinda!

She fired up. I had the engine running for a good 10 minutes, finally set the leads and distributer up and she was idling, sounded really good :( However, and this is a huge however, I noticed a bubble between the cylinder head and block...*man danglies* its a mixture of water/antifreeze & oil.

I might have had the cylinderhead gasket on the wrong way round - The holes lines up either way, except for one copper seal... (second in from top right)

I really don't know why I overlooked it previously, but I'm sending the cylinder head in for a skim etc.

You didnt think it was going to be that easy did you?

Did it really need a skim? Or are you just being 'better safe than sorry'? lol.

A combination of both. I think I'll have the valve seats recut too. I lapped the old valves in, but will probably have the lot replaced and seats recut to eliminate any other problems. A light skim should up the compression slightly and seal the head gasket properly. I have already setup the clutch and throw out adjustments. I used an easy bleed which seems to have done the trick. I'm waiting upon a inner driveshaft boot and some swivel pin rubbers before I refit the driveshaft. Having done that, I'll bleed the brakes and with a light tune up it's MOT time!
