Lol, that part of bodyshell is from a 1988 onwards car- two heater hose holes on the bulkhead :P

It's later than that. It's got the big hole for the fan instead of a grille cut out on the inner wing.

I think that only came in with SPi and MPi.

MPi doesn't have a hole in the inner wing, since the rad is at the front. So it's older than '96 at least

Some MPI's do have a hole in the inner wing as well as a front rad, i bought one of the last MPI shells off the rover production line and it had hole in inner wing and front rad.

91 I think was the start for just cooper SPIs but there were still some 1275 carb'd minis like the sprite
(we're such geeks)

I wonder if thse 1275 carb Minis from that year have a circular cut out or the old style opening in the inner wing?

I pride myself on being a geek!

Yes they did. Well my carb'd Mini 35 (last carb ltd edition Mini) had an electric fan aswell as the standard one.

There's my Mini geeking done for the day  :P

You send the logbook off to DVLA and tick the scrapped box if you've broken up the car and you're honest.
If you still have the car and its major assemblies (see the DVLA points system!) and can't afford a new 'shell or extensive repairs to the original, you keep the car until one day you're rich enough to restore it properly or sell it complete.
If you just have the logbook and the car itself is long gone, well- obviously that's illegal so you keep it to yourself.. not try and make a fast buck on ebay!!

Very few original cars left nowadays.

Illegal

but what else do you do with it?

Throw it away and tell the dvla

Thats just another mini of the road

So when you scrap your mini to buy a new heritage shell

you therefore are holiding an illegal document which you cannot put to a car as you have just scrapped it ready for your new heritage shell?

So in that moment of you being in transaction of scrapping to getting a new shell you can be fined massivly?

Better report some people on this forum then

That's the point though. The car itself blatently no longer exists, hence neither should its logbook.

Yes, it's another Mini lost forever but the car is gone already, probably scrapped years ago when the cars were worth nothing.

Personally I would either:

a. Keep it as a souveneir (remembering to SORN it each year)

b. Keep it and SORN it, until such time that I could afford to buy a new shell.

c. Return it to the DVLA and declare it as scrapped (isn't the actual V5 technically their property any way?? ) .

d. Burn it, Bury it, tear it up into tiny peices etc etc.... anything but sell it on for a profit, knowing full well that it will be used to ring an non tax exempt car for the purposes of road tax evasion and then used at some stage to defraud an unsuspecting buyer that they are purchasing a tax exempt model, that is actually a non tax exempt ringer!! :P

Using it to avoid RFL is committing fraud.

Using it to change the identity of a car is illegal.

Selling a logbook without a vehicle is unlawful, and unethical. Plus it's prohibited by ebay.

I would guess buying a logbook without a car isn't looked upon too well.

I can't believe anyone thinks this is remotely ok. And to suggest dealing with it properly means another mini is not saved, well what a load of rubbish, it doesn't stop anyone restoring or building a mini if they wish to.

What a lot of fuss about nothing.Providing the car is safe on the road it doesnt matter its history.

Yes, legally speaking, if you want to retain the vehicle's original registration, you still need a certain amount of the original parts, even if you buy a brand new 'shell. It's decided on a points-based system as Bungle mentions above.

So.....

If I buy that log book and then steal your Mini and put the two together to make myself a tax exempt car you wouldn't mind?

My cousin's 2002 Sprite has a carb and a hole in the inner wing - same as the part in the photo (just a round hole and no slats).
