Its not illegal to buy a logbook, its using it to put on another car that is illegal.

It surprises me that so many people have responded along similar lines.

Selling a logbook is illegal. The logbook / V5 doesn't belong to you, it belongs to DVLA so you can't sell it. It has no value, it can only change hands when a vehicle is sold and then at zero cost (you can't charge someone more for the official paperwork that describes the car they just bought). This is why Ebay close logbook auctions down.

im not the type to go around stealing peoples belongings, especially minis, but you all know it happens, and there is little anyone but the law can do about it, im just being totally to the point, it goes on, people buy minis, some know its not as it should be but still but it anyways, and there are those who are oblivious that the 1964 mk1 mini is actually a 1986 mayfair with a tax exempt log book thrown at it from a great distance, it will continue for how ever long minis are around, be it another 100years, or another 500 years (by then i think the mini will be long extinct!)

as for the books i have, i will find a shell to match the year or as close as possible, and build it up from a 2nd hand shell, like soooooo many other mini owners out there have done, and will continue to do so in future, its just what happens, illegal or not

then what will you do with the ID of the second shell

put it on a third shell ?

if so what will you do with the ID of the third shell ?

put it on a forth shell ?

if so .........................................

not at all, i would source shells without identification, plenty out there, n if i dont do it, some one else will...

+1 at the end of the day your using the identity of a car which once existed but was scraped, so by using it on a second hand shell it's going to help keep mini's on the road. As long as it's used on a very similar mini I don't have any issues with it at all. Your not creating a new identity your re-using an old one.

Although I know it's illegal, but no one directly (unless you want to start getting philosophical about it) suffers from it unless it's going to be used on a stolen car.

Again shades of Illegal.....

It's not down to you to decide how illegal is it.

A lot of you don't like rules do you.... :)

thats the risk of buying a 2nd hand shell from ebay without an i.d attatched to it, if there wasnt a demand for 2nd hand shells, there would be alot more minis scrapped

I'm not condoning buying old log books and using them to sell fake minis - however if you only use the log book on your own mini then the only people who lose out are the govt. - big tears there then

Erm.... Interesting perception of tax fraud you have there!! ;D

I would say that every person who deliberately defrauds the government by claiming that their vehicle is tax exempt when it isn't, is effectively causing a shortfall in government revenue. That shortfall and all the others like it don't simply just go away, so the government make up for them by passing it on to the rest of us honest people who do pay our road tax!!

Hey but why stop at tax evasion? You might as well drive without insurance too, the rest of us will just pay for any losses by hikes in our own premiums and you might as well claim some benefits you are not entitled to as well, the rest of us will soon pick up that tab for that in our taxes too!!

In short, however you choose to defraud the government, the only people you are really defrauding is the rest of us!! ;D

Oh come on - driving a tax exempt mini is hardly the same as driving without insurance or MoT - I would like to meet the person who has a completely clear conscience and has never done anything illegal no matter how small an infringement it is - road tax is used to prop up other govt atrocities like the £16bn they spend on crap IT - I think they need to get their own house in order before worring about missing a few quid in road tax evasion - which hurts no one - I repeat - as long as you dont defraud anyone else I dont see the harm.

Well it seems that some illegal activities are apparently okay if it's a Mini.

I bet some of you wouldn't be saying it's fine if it was any other car.

Some of you are kidding yourself saying that you are above the law if you're saving a Mini from the scrapyard.

Wow - emotions running high here - did I say it was OK to buy a log book, nick a mini and ring it? - dont think so - what i said was I couldnt see the harm in doing it to your own mini as long as you dont defraud anyone else and when you come to sell it re Mot it with the original log book - yes its illegal to exempt your mini but thats your risk and it doesnt affect anyone else - its not exactly a hanging offence although some in glass houses might see it that way. Please dont tell me you think this is wrong but its OK to illegally download/copy music / films / games - thats called hypocrisy and double standards
