i did wonder if you had changed you mind on 7 ports, dave was tellin me u were doin 1 then u were askin about bulkhead boxes!! u know keeping it mini makes sense until the time comes for something japanese or similar! nice hole by the way, mine wasnt cut that well!! remember when making ur own box, measure twice, cut once!

Are you going forced induction then?! Sorry to say but 120bp, 5 port A series and reliable don't really go together. Mine 1425 was putting out 100bhp at the wheels and that wasn't massively reliable (although it did me well as a daily driver for some time), and Minis84's 1293 was putting out 100bhp at the wheels too, and that needed a rebuild after 6-7k miles. Tis why we both decided to go 16V power.

If you looking to spend over £1k on a 5 port engine then look at it this way:

'Blank' subframe from 16V shop - £400 (If you willing to weld on engine mounts)
Suspension bits - £300
Driveshafts - £300
B16 engine - you can have mine for £250.

It would cost more than that to build an A-series thats puts out the same power and wouldn't be as reliable.

But I understand if you want to stay with A series power, and keep things 'pure'.

yeah im really wanting to keep it mini at the moment. ive never had a tuned a series to know weather they are good or bad so i will give it a try.

oh and as for the 120 bhp thats from swiftunes website, and im going to use an sw10 ive got roller rockers and im buying a rally/ sprint head from them aswell.

from thier website
SW10

Our version of the highly successful MD286, same characteristics but more Efficient on idle to help the MOT emission test.

Power band 2500-7500, Fitted in 1380, st3 head, 1.5 rockers, 45 DCOE produces 120 BHP @7200 100 lbs/ft @ 4500 rpm.Making a very fast road/track day car.

and i will be doing my engine to thier spec where possible, paying attention to piston to deck heights ect to optimise everything. i am also going to build the bottom end as solidly as i can to cope.

Ok, I think the thing that catches most people out, including myself and Tom, are the rebuild periods. Just make sure your aware of what they are.

yeah true jammy rebuild periods are something i hadnt thought about if im honest, im going to be talking to swiftune tommorow anyway so i will ask them.

and dog, if i need to think about alot of rebuilds at 120bhp id imagine they'd be a hell of a lot more frequent if it was 150+bhp, na its too late now as i have a gaping hole in the baulkhead, its an na 1380 with 45 weber. definately.

sounds a really good spec, im suspecting that 120bhp will be flywheel not wheels and its probably rounded up!! not to put a downer on it!! you'll love it, it'll go like stink, numbers dont matter a toss, how it feels will!! make sure it gets setup and start pitting urself against some serious machinery. thats what matters! especially with the lightweight parts helping u.

totally fikus you hit the nail on the head, its definately how it feels. im just going by the numbers for now as i have nothing to compare it to.

and yeah to be fair when i spoke to swiftune they said 115bhp with that set up but the website says 120? thats a flywheel figure. oh well like you say its still going to go like stink!

its definately going to be set up properly and as often as it needs it, as we do some machining at work for a local rolling road so im sure they will help me out!

going on the lightweight theme i just realised the only thing i can think of that will be steel and not carbon or ally is the boot, short of going to a fiberglass shell i think im doing ok.

boot floor now means im going to get an alloy fuel tank made up by the local fabricators, who will also be making my baulkhead box i hope.

list of light weight parts now goes something like:

mb splits
streetfighter doors
lightened subframes
polycarbonate windows
diolen bucket seat
alloy side mounts for seat
alloy 4 pot calipers
superfin drums

carbon:

door cards
dash
rear quarters (on order)
parcel shelf (on order)
front end (on order)
bonnet
bootfloor
miglia arches
roof skin

still to make in aluminium billet

subframe tower mounts
tower bolts
rear hubs

schwing.

in case you cant tell im starting to get a bit excited about my car again!

na just going to stick with steel for the boot, i always think the carbon ones never look like they fit very well, i bought a mint steel one at L2B last year and have welded up all the holes.
