i have found 2 reasons for my minis poor performance over the past couple of months before i took it of the road! i am surprised it ran as well as it did now.
1st when i looked at the head gasket i noticed that bores 2 and 3 had not sealed properly and the major thing is that there is a massive great crack in one of the exhaust vavles, i have never seen one like it before!

yeah took it into work today and that was the general thought, they say it could be caused by the valve clearance being to small(i didnt set them they were done at a garage)
the block has now been totaly striped and i am sorting out the individual componets that need to be machined. i have to now go and buy some of the parts for the build but for now i can keep busy by doing small bits like milling the center man cap.
so i will be phoning MED tomorrow to order my pistons.
the engine/gear box spec will now include
1380 offset bored block
omega pistons
lightened and balenced rods
fully worked crank
center main strap
arp bolts(or simular depending on buget)
SW5 cam kit
ported head with 3 angle valve seats
correct compression ratio
1.5 roller tip rockers
vernier cam gears
dual valve springs
MED stage 1 pre verto clutch
s/c c/r rebuild box
hardened diff pin
center oil pick up
braided oil transfer hose
magnetic oil trap
extended magnetic sump plug

i have started drilling out the spot welds along the wing seams and scuttle, i have also tried out some paint strippers that i bought as i want to take the whole balkhead and inner wings back to bare metal. i will then stone chip the lower balkhead and inner wings, and seam seal all the joints on the upper bulkhead. i will also be treating them with por 15 and 3m zinc primer. i hope this will give a good clean looking finish.
i will also be taking off all the unused brakets in the enigne bay and welding up unused holes. this should look decluttered so the engine can be appreciated more.
