You need the caps fitted but not nesessarily properly torqued down. the crank will move back and fore just a tiny bit. If you can hear it clunking against the thrusts then there is a good chance you have too much end float. Any more than 6 thou and you will need to get fatter thrusts..if its tight, like one or two thou then I would consider giving the thrusts a quick rub on a flat surface with some 2000 grit wet and dry. rub the trusts against the paper and not the paper against the thrusts..(if you see what i mean)..but so long as the crank turns smoothly then even at 2 thou it will be fine..
Im sure you already know this but the primary gear end float and the crank end float are two seperate things..I feel silly even mentioning that, but you never know who's reading your thread...so im covering my bases..

where am i lining the camshaft up with there is three parts on the cam that sit in each bearing can't to seem to get them all flush so do i just have it flush at the oil pump end?
by turning the crank easily with two fingers is this meaning it turns, as mine does but with some resistance probably the weight of the crank i think its what it was like when i was taken it out.
thrusts its the grooved copper side that faces the journals and the smooth side faces the bearing.
going to post piccies in a moment.

side note are the cam followers meant to be a snug fit with the lube.
Is this the cam shaft correctly lined up?
